We should pull out immediately !

If you consider that there have been an average of 160,000 troops in the
Iraq theater of operations during the last 22 months, and a total of 2112
deaths, that gives a firearm death rate of 60 per 100,000.

The death rate in Washington D.C. is 80.6 per 100,000.

That means that you are about 25% more likely to be shot and killed in our
Nation's Capitol, which has some of the strictest gun control laws in the
nation, than you are in Iraq.........................

Conclusion: We should immediately pull out of Washington

Actually, it's about 34% more. The extra 20 is 1/3 of 60. Very interesting, though.

Reality Check

I have WAY too much time on my hands while I'm recovering:

Starting with the murder (not firearm death) rate per 100,000
population for 2004, if you use Washington, DC's city per capita murder rate
(http://www.morganquitno.com/cit04r.pdf, higher than the greater metro
region, http://www.morganquitno.com/met04r.pdf) you get 35.8
murders/100K population (That's 198 murders--DC population 553,523
(http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/11000.html).

In Iraq for the same time period (2004), there were 848 US fatalities
(http://icasualties.org/oif/). The "pull out of DC" email troop
strength numbers of 160,000 are probably high. If we use the US ground
troop numbers over the same period (2004), we get an average of
133,917 (http://www.globalsecurity.org/milita..._orbat_es.htm).
This makes the US troop murder rate (for lack of a better term) 633
per 100,000.

That's almost 20 times higher the rate of DC, and almost 10 times New
Orleans' number two rate (second to Camden, NJ's number one rate of
60.8 per 100,000 (just to interject another issue to the
conversation).

While these numbers are for 2004, and not "the last 22 months" they
likely indicate that the "pull out of DC" emailer, in addition to
being a little insensitive to the sacrifices being made in Iraq, also
has a little trouble with decimal points.

To add to that, not all those 160,000 troops are engaged in combat. They are in a combat zone, just as all the troops in the Viet Nam area, Cambodia, Laos, etc., were in theatre, but the majority were support troops.

In Iraq, I would say a max of 20 % go on patrol. So, of 32,000, you have 2000 plus deaths, and I think I have read, some 14,000 seriously wounded. You could say that is a 50 % casualty rate. Those wounded and evacuated are, naturally, replaced by somebody, whether by a new mobilization of another guard Unit, or some rear echelon troops already there..

The original analogy here is like saying the murder rate in the highest crime area in the DC area should be spread among the whole area, 100 people are murdered in one square block of the meanest "ghetto", average it to the entire population of the city. Sure makes the city seem tame, when you do it that way.

H**l, if you should assign all the deaths to a square block or 2.

Is there something wrong with my reasoning?

Cheers,

George

Funny that H**l is a censored word.

regardless of the the facts, pulling out sounds good to me! I'd love for our troops to return home and quit wasting time in the sand box. Though I thank them, each and every one, for thier service, it is clear we are dealing with a group of folks who like things just as they were and will resist change, whether for good or bad, for all time. they are clearly just too uncivalized for now. Maybe in another500 to 1000 years they will have advanced enough to understand that government elected by the people and accountable to the people (unlike ours, just as corrupt and vile as Saddam's was....only in a differant way ) is a bit more desireable than a king on camel back.

Who? I don't know a single veteran from the gulf war all the way back to WW11 who wants to give these punks in Iraq the stisfaction of seeing us run.If you are referring to my comment, what would you call it if your son joined up, died in combat, you met with the Commander-In Chief, and then you started claiming that it was all a lie and supporting pro-communist orginizations? I personally think that Casey would be puking right now.
