Outrider,

I find it interesting that I will be able to watch as something this controversial and this huge will be placed before a so called conservatively leaning supreme court in order to overturn an established law. Regardless of anyone's views on the subject, this is something that doesn't come along often and as some have said I think it could have some consequences for the republican party that they may not have considered.

I saw another article on an abortion study but I have decided that I wouldn't post it.

Is it true they backed off on a referendum?

Anyone know anything about that?

That was me. I said if they succeded in overturning Roe, it would mobilized the liberal base.
I find it interesting as well.

Yeah I remember someone saying that also. It will be interesting nontheless regardless of outcome.

Two questions on my mind.

What happens if the conservatives on the bench don't vote unanimously to overturn? Remember Robert's claimed it to be "Settled" law as far as he's concerned.

What happens if they do overturn. What other legislation do you think the Ultra Christian Right will try to pursue in the name of God.

I think they will try for an Amendment on both sides of the issue.
Other than that it's hard to say because both sides would be without a focus for awhile.
A total legislative ban would never last if that's what they tried.
Of course, a federal ban may in turn be stopped by the Court on more solid ground than Roe was. The problem with Roe has always been that it's such a contrived and poorly grounded case.

Roe vs. Wade is not legislation, nor would be its demise. The "Christian Right" is not always so, but in their collective opinion of Roe vs. Wade, they (along with a majority of Americans) are "right".

Considering that the left has pursued overturning legislation or, more appropriately stated, attempting to create legislation from the bench, "right" pursuit would not necessarily be a bad thing.

I still believe that if Roe vs Wade is overturned, the Republican Party will lose an essential part of its "guns, gays and God" strategy. For that and other reasons, I'm not sure they really want it killed; they'd rather keep torturing it.

I also think the two state bills are a piece of political grandstanding, and that it may backfire on them like the Terry Schiavo hullaballoo did.

More on the political implications, from USA Today

As opposed to the right and wrong of abortion.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/washing...ion-side_x.htm

Their numbers concerning Roe vs Wade are extraordinarily different from the 52-47 percent figures in the Zogby poll discussed earlier in this thread. I'd have to see exactly what questions were asked, and in what order, before I'd know which to believe:

"Two-thirds in a USA TODAY/CNN/Gallup Poll in January said they did not want the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade, compared with 25% who said they did."

I hate polls because anyone can make a poll turn out anyway that they want just by the way it is worded or the group that is polled.
