Gun Safes.

I have Heritage that holds up to 36 guns. I feel it is a quality product with good fire protection. What do you have / recomend? Any problems with your brand of safe?

The reason I am asking, is my uncle wants me to get a gun safe for him. There is a gun show in Charlotte this weekend, and I am trying to gather information so I can find the best deal for the money.

My personal opinion is that just about any gun safe will keep the punk neighborhood burglar out of his guns. Aside from fire safety, I'd say it's more a matter of aesthetics and whether you're willing to pay for the bells and whistles, like punch pads instead of knobs for the combination lock, etc.

Adjustable layouts inside are nice; he can shuffle the shelving and racks depending on whether he has mostly handguns or long guns. Some have a separate keyed compartment inside for valuables or ammo. And I forget the brand, but there's at least one that you can bolt a smaller safe on top of, for handguns or ammo or whatever.

I was looking at Liberty for a while. Then my friend got a Winchester that was basically built out of 1/4" steel plate, with double thickness on the front.

The Libertys are like refrigerators, thin metal wrapped around to make it look thick. But they have better fire protection.

The most important piece to me is the lock. I liked the S&G Group II

The last thing you want is the lock to fail.

I also liked the fort knoxx, but no local dist, so I could only look online.

Ended up not getting anything yet, but I need to.

I have a fire proof that holds about 7 handguns. It was a hand-me-down, but works well. It is the good ol combo lock. I would have a hard time buying a safe that is digital and runs on batteries.

around here the Ft. Knox(sp?) is top of the line...better fireproofing than anything else on the market in these parts...also costs big $$....i have an "american eagle" by cannon with a 30min 1200 degree guarantee...i think the ft know equilvalent was over an hour at 1200 or some such...it was quite a bit more

Where are you in NC? A trip to Mace Sports in Mebane may be worth your while to look and compare. I go there every so often. I stopped by today and picked up a bench rest for cleaning. They have a good safe selection.

I remembered the name of the stackable safes; strangely enough, it's "Stack-on." They seem pretty decent boxes for the money.

I am in Forest City. It's about 60 miles West of Charlotte, on Hwy. 74. I'm 5+ hours from the capitol.

Yeah, I would say that is "inwnc". I am not familiar with places in Charlotte to check out for gun shops, etc. I do order from a company in Indian Trail from time to time. My corporate office is in Charlotte, so I do travel there once in a while, but never get to go gun shopping.

You can try calling Dave Salyer of Charlotte Rifle and Pistol Club. www.cr-pc.org at phone 803 327 6902 for advice. He is also a bullseye specialist gunsmith.

Well, I have told this story here before.
I used to sell Safes.
I was A full line browning Dealer about 15 years ago
We had the top of the line Browning safe it was green with gold metalflake pinstrips Be U tee fulllll !!!!!!!
We called it the Green weeeniee because at $2300 dollars it was expensive
and then one day it sold.
We where so happy beause we needed the floor space.
The guy was a regular customer, he had had a breakin but they had not been able to carry much.
He put the safe in his liveing room
He had a big window to his front yard.
a few months later he had gotten burgularized again.
they had chipped the paint a little but the safe had held!
he came in to tell me about it he was so proud.

They came back when he was home.
at first he refused to open the safe.
They Beat him Horribly
Then that told him they where going to shoot him. First in the foot, then the ankel then the knee.............
He opened the safe.

When you are dead you cant own and enjoy any guns.
A gun safe is good for fire protection and un authorized handleing
after that..........Well, Anybody can get got.

Dont Fool yourself in to thinking otherwise.

Good reminder that the easiest way into a safe is to have the owner open it for you, Dennis. I've heard it said before that if you have a safe and you're burglarized, you need to be extra alert that they don't come back when you're home.

What I have isn't pretty or expensive, but it's solidly bolted to the floor and wall, and no teenager or crack head from down the street is getting into it.

I doubt it would stop a professional, but my neighborhood runs more to wacked-out semi-amateurs looking for a quick few bucks or some cheap thrills.

Thanks for the info. Where I live is pretty much a rural area. Crime around here is usualy pretty small stuff.
