| Senior Member | Dog training problem
My parrents rescued a 2 year old Cocker Spaniel from the shelter about 6 months ago. Most of the time she is a great lap dog, never wants to be away from them. Now that the weather is getting good enough to have the dog outside or longer periods of time, she is starting to be very aggressive towards other dogs, and whoever is holding her back. Last time she did this she got about 1/4 bottle of Bitter Apple in her face (for those of you who don't know, it is a training spray that dogs aren't supposed to like the taste/smell), didn't phaze her in the slightest bit. They also try a technique where they push the dogs rump down and hold back on the back of the collar (not too much pressure, just enough to get the dog to submit). They are getting new neighbors in a couple weeks w/ a golden retreiver, so this problem could come out alot more often with a dog next door. My parrents are considering a shock collar, this one in particular http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...h-results1.jsp Have you guys ever used a collar like this, is it efective? Any other suggestions? Thanks for your help.

My last job for my company before I became a pipeliner was meter reading, and I came to one inescapable conclusion: cocker spaniels are nuts. they're neurotic, nervous and aggressive. It's not a pretty combination. I didn't run into a whole lot of them, but almost every single one tried to come after me. Maybe your parents are finding out why she was at the shelter? |

I'm not sure how well a shock collar would work for aggressive behaviour. I knew a guy that used one on his dog for excessive barking. It worked pretty good. The dog soon learned that after two barks he got a shock. It might make the aggressive part even worse by getting the dog mad.. Maybe electric shock isnt the answer. Hydraulic shock would sure cure him. Kidding..if he gets mad at the person holding him, thats a very scary situation. I would never trust him. |

Thanks guys, I've had that in the back of my head since it nipped at me. I just needed to hear it from sombody else. My parrents now want to take it to the animal rescue league, but I don't want sombody with little kids to inherit their problems.

SK, my answer was facetious, but , as I've stated before, some dogs are just phsyco. I've never had a personal prob with Cocker Spaniels and sometimes, nothing you can do will change their behavior.

I think they've been inbred and overbred. When I was a kid in the 'fifties, I don't remember the one we had being nuts. There are animal rescues that specialize in agressive dogs; they work with them, and if they can't change them they make darn sure whoever gets them knows what they're getting. they could also return her to the shelter they got her from. Depending on what type it is that could be a death sentence, if they're told she's aggressive. Or they may just be careful who gets her. In a worst-case scenario, they just could adopt her out again to someone with kids, which is not a good idea. A shame; they're beautiful dogs. |

Yes Inbred and overbred. Cut losses and move on. Seen too many of them go bad. Seen a few good ones too. If they don't go psyco they will end up with other health issues possibly.

I have a pure bread bloodhound and he is the best. Cletus is always there for me when I need some cheering up. If you want I can have Cletus eat your dog.

We had the dog put down yesterday evening, It bit Dad pretty hard. I think they'll be holding off on buying another dog for a while. Dad's ok, he just feels lucky that it was him and not a little kid from the neighbors.
