The King can do no wrong?

A senior White House official, commenting on Scooter Libby's claim that President Bush authorized the leaking of parts of the highly classified National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) to Judith Miller, said:

"By definition, the president cannot leak. He has the inherent authority to declassify something. …It's like accusing a shopkeeper of shoplifting from himself."

So whatever Dubya says or does is supposedly "by definition" legal, simply because he's the one doing it?

Personally, I don't like the analogy. Bush isn't the shopkeeper, because he doesn't own the shop any more than a CEO owns a corporation. He's an employee, stealing from the people who do own it.

you got that right. but, little hitler has an agenda, don't forget that. he acts stupid, does stupid things but, he's not stupid...I'll give him that much. however, by his actions, and words, he thinks we all are stupid. That annoys me!

We have more than 34 months I fear, I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think Bush will leave office. First off, he loves money and oil. He'll get us involved with Iran even if it means sacrificing American lives on US soil. I'm still trying to figure out how he'll suspend the elections, or better yet when/how/why he'll declare martial law. The bird flu has lost steam in the past few months, and I don't think Iran will do anything stupid. Even though their president said he wants to wipe Israel off the map, he has to know that to nuke Israel will cause Iran to glow for many years to come. Bush doesn't want that either because then theres no way to get to her oil. IMO, that leaves two options, another 9/11 type attack(on a much bigger scale) or civil unrest, to the point of nation wide riots. If there is another 9/11 type attack, it will be on the nuclear level. Bush will then institute a draft and set out to conquer the middle east. Martial law will be declared in the US to keep us "safe" from the terrorists. As for civil unrest, this whole immigration deal may be part of it. They are also saying that over the next 10 years or so, the hurricane seasons will get worse. Let a few more Katrinas slam into Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas and see what happens. Of course this depends on the weather......... or does it?

Haven't you heard? He is going to cange the law and become a dictator never allowing anyone else to get in. You know it is not possible to get in through a fair election because those are a thing of the past. When it comes to Repubs from Texas there are no laws.:flame:

I want Billy Boy back in the seat. The scandles involving him are very interesting and hot:right:

I mean, Clinton was the leader of the free world, one of the most powerful men on the planet, and the best he could do was that chubby little J.A.P. (Jewish-American Princess) from Beverly Hills?

I suspect that anything he got had to be on the side, because Hillary probably told him years ago, "I love you dearly, Bill. But you aren't touching me with that thing, because I don't know where it's been."

Getting back to the subject at hand

"By definition, the president cannot leak. He has the inherent authority to declassify something."

That defense doesn't amount to a hill of beans, because he didn't declassify the stuff he leaked; he just blabbed it. That means that if anyone else talked about it, they could still be charged.

I've often wondered why I can get a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt in my car, considering its MY personal property. Why do I have to pay property taxes when it belongs to me, I own it. Why do I have to pay a car tax each year when I payed the tax when I bought the car? I don't have to pay taxes on my TV each year. And speaking of taxes in general, why does the IRS say paying taxes is voluntary, but you go to jail when you don't pay? Why must I pay a social security tax? Shouldn't I get a choice? Heres one, why should I pay a school tax when I have no kids? Off topic I know, but just seemed good since we are talking about the government.

Because the government needs money to carry out its functions, there must be some system for getting it from the citizens it serves. I don't think it would get far on donations.

On your specific questions:

1. Lawmakers have decided that helping you keep yourself alive and reducing your chances of injuries in a wreck is beneficial to yourself, your family, your employer, the health-care system and society in general.

2. Historically, property taxes have been the favored way for governments worldwide to decide how much people can afford to cough up to support its essential functions, because property is harder to hide than income.

3. Unlike your TV, the government (local, state and/or national) pays for construction and upkeep of the roads you drive your car on. It also tests people to make sure they aren't public menaces to the public on those roads, and hires people to enforce safe driving on them.

4. I Don't remember the IRS ever saying taxes were voluntary. I can show you some pretty impressive letters from the IRS and addressed to me, saying the exact opposite.

5. You must pay a Social Security tax because if it were voluntary too many people wouldn't pay, and then society would again be faced with the prospect of either letting old folks starve or supporting them anyway.

6. You pay school tax partly to help offset the costs incurred in educating you when you were young, and partly because an educated populace is beneficial to society as a whole and you're a part of it.

Here's another reason: self-defense. Kids are a lot less likely to burglarize your home while you're working, if they're in school. And after they grow up, they're a lot better-equipped to take care of themselves and land a job, instead of depending on mugging you, stealing and stripping your car, or living on welfare.

I'm not saying our taxes are always fairly collected or well-spent. But some form of tax collection is totally necessary.

Heck, you rent no matter what. If you "buy" it, you just have the oppritunity to "rent" it to someone else at a profit if you hold that "rental" for 2 years. If not, they'll take your "profit" as capital gains! BOHICA brother!!!!
