As a teenager living on a Kansas farm near El Dorado, KS, we had two horses. One a quarter horse, and the other a Morgan (check out this link:

The quarter horse named "fleet" had some funny habits we had to constantly be aware of...such as...if we rode her into the edge of a creek or pond to drink...she might just keep walking and lay down even with you on her back.

. Another was that if you were riding her around cattle you'd better be ready for her to jerk left or right because of her natural tendency to "cut" cattle. You could be dislodged quickly if you weren't properly set in the saddle.
As for "Pet" our morgan horse, she was used for riding, too, but was also big enough and strong enough for us to attach a single mouldboard plow or cultivator to her and use here to plow or cultivate or huge garden. My dad believed that a big garden helped keep my brother and I out of trouble.
Eventually, when they were too old, they were sold to a company in Wichita, KS who converted them into leather products.

Dad didn't believe in letting them live in the pasture unless they served a usefull purpose.
