starting off, have question about m44 and ammo...

hi, i'm getting into shooting again and last weekend i was out and a guy at the local range had an m44 there that he let me shoot. i loved it. so i've been browsing this forum today and saw that they are, as well as other mosin nagant rifles, highly liked. anyways, i was wondering if i should get an m44 to start off. is it a good beginner gun (mosin-nagant wise)? i know they're cheap and reliable guns and i saw a couple nice ones in big5 for about 90 bucks.

also, i was looking for ammunition advice earlier on a different thread and someone recommended the silver tipped czeck round or just for target shooting, some kind of hollow core round. any advice?? i was looking here and i found this, which one should i get and are these good deals?

http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/c..._7_62x54R.html

any help is appreciated. thanks!!!

Well, I hate always telling newbies this, but I think for a good BEGINNER gun a mid-priced .22LR rifle would be the best choice. You can learn a lot about gun safety and handling and shoot A LOT for cheap. You can shoot 500 rounds for around 10 bucks or so. (That's cheap bulk ammo). You can also learn about good shooting technique without developing a flinch. That's the way I feel about it.

Now, if you have some experience with .22's and the like, then maybe a Mosin Nagant M-44 would be a good choice. I have one, from Big 5, and I enjoy it alot. It was $105 out the door, and it is a blast to shoot.

I think any centerfire gun is going to take a lot more maintenance, which might not be the best for a beginner. It's kind of up to you.

Read all the threads about Mosins on this site. You can get it to show all threads since the beginning and you will learn a lot. Do that and ask a few questions. That's what I did. You will learn a lot.

Good luck.

The M-44 is a fine gun but if you are looking for a gun to shoot on a regular basis, you might want to hold out for the M-38 or 91\30. That bayonet hanging off the side of the M-44 tends to make the gun a bit awkward and doesn't help the accuracy at all. Just remember also, that ALL military surplus ammo for these guns will be corrosive and will require thorough cleaning with a product that will neutralize the corrosive salts-Windex works well for a short-term cleaner. Wolf ammo is pretty reasonable and is non-corrosive but does shoot pretty dirty and will require more cleaning than other commercial brands. Good Luck and Happy Shooting!

i might have worded this wrong so sorry for the confusion. i'm not new to guns but i have never owned a high powered rifle. i own three .22's, a colt .45 and a couple shotguns. and i am planning on getting several rifles within the next few months, one being a ruger mini 14. but when i shot that m44 last weekend i loved it! and i've read all the threads on how to clean them well when using corrosive ammunition, so i'm ok there.

anyways, thank you both for the advice, i really appreciate it.

but to answer your question, you should get a mosin nagant, they are so reliable and accurate

Defiantly get the M44 or M38. The M44 bayonet is in the way sorta, but is really not that big a deal. The silver-tip ammo shoots good - it is corrosive though.

I would get an AR-15 instead of the Mini-14 though - if you can afford the difference.

Just shoot non-corrosive 7.62x54r, then you wont have to do the hot soapy water thing or windex. Its more expensive though buy non-corrosive.

Just thought I'd mention that the 91/30 doesn't kick as hard as the M38 or M44, but some see the kick and huge muzzle flash as part of the fun! ( myself included.... god that boom they make is awesome! ) I don't think it would make a good first gun for someone who has no experience, but since you already have shooting experience I would say go ahead and get it since you liked it! They are very easy to clean and maintain. If you want to take it all the way down all you need is a flat head screwdriver!
It is true that you won't have to dump windex down the barrel if you shoot non corrosive ammo, but since you should clean it after every shooting session, it isn't really inconvenient to do the windex treatment anyway from shooting the corrosive stuff. You can also buy the corrosive stuff in bulk which saves you alot of money in the long run with ammo costs, which is another thing that makes these guns so much fun to shoot! They are cheap to shoot and have lots of power! :right:
Oh, and welcome to gun and game by the way!

It's the worst. I feel like I'm 8 years old and I know I'm going to get something big for Christmas, like a bike. And Christmas is 10 MORE DAYS AWAY!
