| Senior Member | Trains found underwater! Mystery! This is a true story! 5 miles off the NJ coast in 85 feet of water two steam locomotives found lying upright within 10 feet of each other, side by side. There is no shipwreck in or around the engines. Aside from a box carrying some large lollipop looking items there is nothing else to be found in the vicinity. They are estimated to be 150 years old. Wanna guess how they got there?

| Senior Member | Pretty much the going answer! That or they jettisoned them to avoid capsizing. Any clue as to how they landed right side up? This is an easy one! There is no record of any ship losing two locomotives during a storm.

| Amtrak budget cuts Patterson Nj was a big locomotive manufacturing center in 1856. I surmise a shipping barge sank or even a ferry got swept out to sea in a storm. I dont think a bridge collapsed, but then I dont know exactly where they were found. The lollypops are probably old signals depending on how big etc.Heilung Last edited by heilung; 05-23-2006 at 10:34 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

| Senior Member | i got the answer for ya. some time ago i was watching a show about the very story you are talking about. these guys went nuts trying to find out why those trains were out there. apparently there is only one or two trains identical to those that were found on the bottom, and they are in a museam somewhere. this helped out the investigaters greatly cause now they had something very specific to search for in records. apparently those trains were on a boat, and it encountered heavy weather. the ships crew cut the trains loose to save the ship. the investigaters even found the old insurance documents or something like that. anyways they did find paperwork referring to the loss of the trains at sea. thats kind of the meat and potatoes of the story, the tv one was much better than the one that i just told. cool story huh? |

I just spoke to the person in charge (via Email) of the recovery of the engines at the historical society. He did not know as of Tuesday which ship the locomotives were from. But they believe as you indicated that the engines were either swept or cut during a storm.

| they landed right side up because they are bottom heavy, + unless the steam drums were holding water they would be holding air. thereby keeping the locomotives rightside up as they sank. |
