Pred,
I am a former Deputy Sheriff (5 years) and a Former Correctional Officer working in the Bureau of Prisons- Federal Prison System (7 years) . This job will definitely change you, please remember this: you will see things that people do, you never thought a human was capable of ! My advise to you is to treat the inmates fairly yet firmly, you can always go from a no to a yes but it is very difficult to go from a yes to a no. Never raise your voice in the cell house/ dorm, yelling only causes the party to become defensive. If you need to talk with someone do it one-on-one, it shows strength and respect for the individual, one of the worst thing you can do is start yelling at an inmate in front of his peers, he becomes defensive and in serious cases assaultive. One of the most important things to do is listen to what is going on, the inmates are talkative for any number of reasons, listen... Remember that inmates can not be trusted so never tell then anything about your personal life and never let them call you by your first name always Mr. _____.
Hopefully, your training will be adequate and comprehensive. Correctional Facilities are very dangerous places, be careful, use your head. If something sounds wrong it usually is.
I personally do not miss that type of work but certainly applaude those that can lock themselves into the un-natural environment of our nations prisons and keep the facilities safe for staff and inmates as well. Let us know how it works out...
