| Hey Gio!!
If your cousin uses a223 in Pa for deer, they better never run into a game warden.. 24 caliber is smallest that is legal here for deer. Just letting you know. I wouldt want them to get nailed.Poachers here use the 223, And I know some wardens will assume...

As far as I know, a 223 is legal in Carolina, So I am going to use my AR-15 with a 64grain 223 Win Power Point Plus to open up the season. I feel confident with this caliber since I can place all 20rounds out of my magezine in a 5-10inch circle, shooting rapidly. Obviously, I won't be hunting with 20rounds but I do feel confident that even if I do happen to miss where I'm aiming on the first shot, my second and third shots will be quick, accurate, and enough to bring her down cleanly. If a 223 remains legal in Carolina, Your gonna see me up on the back of my Chevy Truck, with my AR-15 on opening day!

Remington 700 .243 zeroed 1 inch at 100 yds. I got my first deer, 250 yards with a .243 Rem 700.

I don't own one, but i would vote the 30-06 the best all around whitetail deer rifle. Obviously as everyone has said, it's a very versatile round with bullet weight ranging from 55gr to 220gr. Unless you plan to shoot a hell of a long way, i can't think of any situation where this rifle would not get the job done. I would buy one but i have a 7mm and a .243 so there would be no sense in doing it. My other 2 cents is that a 12 guage would be suitable for most situations. They have come a long way in the past 5 years. Not to mention you would be able to small game hunt in the switch of a barrel.

My pick would be the good ol' .303 British with 150 gr. SP's.

| Best deer rifle
The best deer rifle is the one in which you have the most confidence. Some like 243's; some 257's; some 7mm's; some 30's and some larger. Any centerfire larger than .22 in the hands of a competent rifleman will take and has taken deer efficiently.
I prefer the 25's for eastern whitetails; 250/3000,257 Roberts, or 25/06.
If you hunt in areas where long shots are common you probably need something larger.
GOOD LUCK and GOOD SHOOTING!!!!

| hunting Hello all where i hunt sometimes you get a hundred yard shot and sometimes you get a five hundred yard shot i think all of the guns you fellas have mentioned would apply here in the wide open spaces of southwest Kansas although I do prefer the venerable 30-06
I have taken several deer with this good ole round but i have also shot a few with a marlin 30-30 remember put the bullet where it counts and a 223 will do the same as a 300 win mag will do (make them dead )

It's hard to beat a Remington 760,7600 in either .270 or .30-06.

.223 is legal in PA for deer as well as even a .17 Remington. Our rules state "centerfires only".

My favorite deer rifle is my Winchester Model 88 in .308. I have over 20 rifles in various calibers and brands and this is the one that is in my hand come deer season. It won't win any bench rest competitions with 1.5" groups but it is the best handling rifle I've ever used, and I've used a lot of rifles. It's a pure hunting rifle.

| Best deer rifle?
BEST like BEAUTY is in the mind of the beholder!
That said, my choices(plural) are 250/3000; 257 Roberts; 25/06. As you can see they are all quarter-bores. That's my thing!
GOOD LUCK and GOOD SHOOTING!!!

| Huh?
[QUOTE=Dale;252297]
Where I grew up in a very wooded and mountanous northeast Pennsylvania you rarely had a shot over 100-120 yards and a 30.06 or the .308 will handle that range with ease with the .308 having a little more carry and energy for longer distances out to, say, 300 yards. Just what gave you the idea that " the .308 having a little more carry and energy for longer distances out to, say, 300 yards" ? The .308 is a fine cartridge but it will never quite keep up with an '06, just not enough powder space in there. |

My old 32 win. special has, for me, taken all my deer.Got one at 270 once but most less than a hunnard. My boy swears by his Sako L579, 243 win. His rifle is the most beautiful plum colored gun I ever saw.
