looking to buy a pump action .30cal, need advice

Hey there,

I'm looking to buy a pump action .30cal scrub gun, preferably a .308 , it will be used for hunting wild boar, i want it to have....

- a synthetic stock
- detachable magazine (preferably)
- short in length/short barrel (easily monuvered)
- take a red dot sight

any advice on what model i should buy, or any other advice you may have for me would be much appreciated.

cheers

The only rifle that comes to mind in that category is the Remington Model 742 pump. A few hunters locally have them, and it seems a good gun.

I think the 742 is an auto - the 760/7600 is the pump.

For a long barreled version, I'd go with the 30-06. For a carbine, I'd go 308. If you're having it custom shortened, I'd go with an 18" barrel on the 308, due to it being a good tradeoff length between ballistics and maneuverability. Checking their specs, it appears only the 30-06 is offered as a carbine. There's an LE version in 308, but it's barrel is only 16.5" long. It does have ghost ring sites though for quick targeting.

I do believe the Remington 7600 is the only pump out there, at least commonly made, in full power cartridges such as 30-06 and 308.

Thanks, BRG - I musta had a brainfart. Most Remmy pumps I see here are either .243 or .30-06 - women and new shooters like the smaller caliber.
The auto has an available extended magazine - I would assume it would fit the pump, but don't quote me on that.

I had heard somewhere that remington was going to come out with a synthetic stocked 7600 in .308 that will take either M-14 or FN FAL mags like they did with the .223/ar15 mag rifle. That would be a very cool rifle.

If you want a good .308, get a Savage 99. OK it's not a pump, it's a lever rifle, and it has a 20 sumthin inch barrel, and it doesn't have a detatchable magazine, and it's nothing close, except the .308, to what you're looking for, but it's a great gun. :right:

yeah i'm gona go with the remmy 7600 in .308, its got everything i'm looking for and it's at a good price.

the savage 99 might be alright but my dad's got a winchester 30/30 lever action and it's a bit to cowboy for my liking, but thats just me.

anyway thanks all for your advice.
