Excellent article! And actually, I think you'd be surprised how much money we all actually make. I was shocked when I tired of my wife (who up until recently handled all of the finances) continually crying poor when I wanted to go out and do things with her and the kids. So I decided to take over the checkbook and come up with a budget. Know what I discovered? That after all of our bills were paid, we had an incredible $1200 left over every month. Yes, that's a 12 with TWO zeros before the decimal point. I then began researching our bank statements to find out where all of that money had gone, and to my shock discovered that we had been nickle-and-diming ourselves to death. We'd go to McDonald's, or to Target and see something cute for the kids, and think, "Oh, it's only ten bucks", or "It's only five bucks." Believe me, it adds up. So now I stick firmly to the budget, and sock money away in not one but two seperate savings acounts PLUS our TSP (sort of the Coast Guard's version of a 401k), so we have an account for retirement, one for emergencies, and one for vacations. After all of that is done, we then each get about $250 per month to just piss away on McDonald's or whatever. This will be the first year we go to Disneyworld and NOT be on a shoestring budget! |
