I was recently browsing through a gun/pawn/tool shop and came across a gun I had never seen before. It was a S&W 65-5. Sent out a question on some of the other forums I frequent and for the price they were asking for I was told to run and get it. They wanted $275.00 and the gun is in 98% condition. It has a bobbed hammer that could have beed done at the factory and the gun is now DAO. I did buy the gun but talked him down to $250 out the door. Two days ago I found a wood grip that I really liked to dress it up but the grip was not fitting properly at the top. I had suggestions to send it back, but it was made by an unknown company so what to do!!!
Well I decided to keep these gorgeous grips and gently modify them to fit. I like the way they turned out.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but those look like the factory standards. also, is that one of the older models with the firing pin attached to the hammer directly?

Actually the grip is from an unknown manufacturer...according to my gunstore anyway. They were in a sealed plastic bag with a tag stating "S&W K frame" and nothing else. They look very similar to Hogues I have seen on other guns but there is no markings to show this. They are not the originals from S&W, the gun came with Hogue Rubber Finger Grove grips on it. The way the wood grips feel in my hand, makes me think they moulded clay to fit my hand while I was sleeping, then made the grips, followed me around until they saw where I shop, ran in ahead of me and placed them in the case for me to buy. All I can say is.....nothing has ever felt so natural in my hand. Yes, the gun has the firing pin attached to the hammer. The gun has a one piece barrel and no safety lock. I really scrutinized the gun before buying it, especially around the forcing cone area. I understand from S&W knowledgables, this gun was prone to forcing cone cracking from low grain weight/high velocity loads. I used a jewelers loupe to really get in close and look for any such damage. Mine looks like it came out of the factory a week before I bought it. I am heading to the range ASAP. I really want to find out what kind of accuracy this gun is capable of. I'll let ya know when the paper punchin begins....
They are from Pat Hogue. I have used those kind on several revolvers and they are help on by one screw at the bottom. They are expensive and you bought the gun at a great price! Have a blast with it!
Dave thanks for the clarification on the grips. I was wondering who made them. Does Mr. Hogue have a website or a way to find out if I can get grips for other revolvers I own. I have a 3" SP-101 that I would like to have a similar grip for. I don't guess that he is afilliated with the Hogue Grip maker we all know......is he????
