GlennM I have the very same 300WM you have. It's a great rifle but just a tad heavy to be packing up and down the Mounatins for me.
Absolutely agree with you 100%. She IS a heavy rig, especially with the LE-12 Rangefinding Redfield and bipod. For bench work, and less felt recoil because of the weight, it's a dream. But my ticker'd give up the ghost if I had to go up and down hills of any size with it on my back. Here's a couple pics of her.....

Thanks for this thread and all the posts about the 300WM, some helpful info.

A couple of years ago I loaded up some 300WM loads and fired them through a friend's Browning A Bolt...

...and it was an impressive rifle/caliber to shoot.

I'm looking into buying a Remington 700 in 300WM this month...

...and wondered about taming the recoil a bit.

Thanks for info on Shooter's Friend:

It just slips on and is the best $20.00 I have spent in a long time.

Trust me on this one, as I have two of them.

LTS, try this reload for your 700 and I think you'll 1) love the accuracy out to 300yds AND 2) the significantly reduced recoil:
62 grains IMR4350
200 grain Sierra BTHP
Winchester Mag primer

Good luck with your 700. I think you'll love it, especially with that load above. It's also easier on the barrel throat regarding wear, and still produces enough energy to take about any game on the NA continent, although I wouldn't recommend a hollow point for bigger game such as elk or bear. But for targets you'll like it.

I love this round. 100 yard key holes. kills anything in north america I have shot at. I have a M-70 with a BOSS break. Recoil is like a shot gun.

300 Win Mag

Just bought a Mossberg 4x4 300 win mag and I have lots of shooting experience, and I must say it almost blew my arm off lol very accurate at long range and still has a punch......a little light but I will dominate this rifle......I love this cal.

Even though this is an old post, after I have got a few hundred rounds down my .300 WM I might as well weigh in. When I first shot my .300 I thought it kicked like a mule, but it took me about 80 rounds to get comfortable shooting the rifle so I got to the point of not really noticing the difference in recoil between it and my .243 (part of my training with .22 smallbore comp, not noticing anything during the shot except for the fundamentals). I have got my handloads down to a consistent .7 MOA to 300 yds and the impact on the target is impressive. So far I only have taken a bear with it but the penetration was incredible, into the skull and out the back by the liver. Cant wait to try it on elk in a few weeks.

It is not any fun at any distance less than 300 to 400 yds.
There is almost no chance of missing at that short of distance.
I shot a buddys gun it had a bull barrel, big scope, thick butt pad, & a 2# trigger I just stuck that gun between 2 sand bags, aimed, & bang it hit exactly where I was aiming from 300yds. I didn't even try very hard.

I shot my Ruger 77 Mk 2 .300 Win Mag for the first time yesterday. I love this combo. It is a fine round that will not kick you to death compared to other magnums.

i love my 300 win. its the rem 798 and yes it kicks but so dose my 12 ga and its no worse than any other mag that i have shot. as far as killing power i do not know yet i have not killed anything with it but for what i've read and seen i and not going to be depressed with it.
so in my mind beer forever if you not 5ft nothing weakling you'll be good to go.

"What is the 300 Win Mag like?"

Like a .30-06 on steroids. Best when used with the heavier bullets.

Great cartridge really but my -06 has all the power I will ever need.

I stand by my original statement. I didn't say you couldn't use it. I think there are better choices. The 30-06 is much better for smaller game and the 300 Weatherby is much better for larger game or longer shots.

I'm not a fan of having one all-around rifle - I like having a specific caliber for a specific purpose. The 300 Win mag doesn't fit that model.

last time i checked the 300 win mag was a great moose and elk gun and cheaper to shoot than a weatheerby mag
