.45 with good loads would work good as a woods rifle.

I have to disagree. I have a 1873 Uberti 24"bbl 45LC and I have shot the same +P loads with it that I shoot in both my Ruger SA revolvers for years. Now if it was a 1860,or 1866 with the brass receiver I would agree, they are not as strong. THB

Either one would work out to 100 yards. I wouldnt use the +p loads in the 1873 action. You can still get 1250 from a 250 gr bullet and not get into +p pressures. Thats 44 mag pistol power. Just my .02.

I'm gonna have to agree with Taurus Fan on this one! Top 357 loads in anything are not in the same league as top 45 Colt loads in a Puma.

I'm pretty old school and have killed more deer with the 44 magnum than anything else. Most were shot with a 1894 Marlin and several with various handguns of that caliber. I lost track of how many I'd killed at around 125 and that was 10 years ago....I killed nine this year alone. Of all of those deer about half were killed with the little 44 mag lever gun. What it boils down to is the style of hunting and the terrain that you'll be hunting in. Many have posted that they have many guns that they would use before resorting to either caliber listed by the original poster. If your hunting in the wide opens of out west then by all means you need more than a lever gun. However of all the deer that I have killed I can count on one hand the number that were outside the range limits of a good 45 Colt load in a Puma. I might add that I now shoot a Puma 45 as someone stole the Marlin a couple of years ago. In my deer hunting world 100 yards is about as far as I ever have to shoot and usually much less.

Paco Kelly wrote an excellent article on the Legacy 92 in 454 Casull. In this article he also list some of his favorite 45 loads which surpass everything in regards to power that I was ever able to accomplish with the 44 mag. As far as the 92 action itself.. well the fact that it is capable of withstanding the 60,000+ cup that the 454 Casull emits says it all. That much pressure would render a Marlin junk in short order and the same goes for the 1873's.

Rather than repeat Paco's thoughts I'll let you read the article yourself. Here it is....

Legacy 92 .454

The steel receivers of the 73 replica's are strong yes, but the weak point is the toggle action. If you want to hot-rod your loads I would go with a 92.

The 45 Colt is way better than a 357 anything. The gun you want to buy is the issue. IF you want to hunt with a model 73, Buffalo Bore has a 45colt load that is safe in any colt clone pistol. That would make it safe to shoot in the '73. I've seen more than a few '73 actions and the thing I don't like is the puny bolt that has to hold everything tight in the chamber.

I have a puma 92 in .45 LC that i picked up after arguing the same thing in my mind, to put it simply, a good heavy hardcast bullet in a .45 LC with powder suitable to push it at top end velocities the action is capable of, much more than any replica handgun could handle, would in the least replicate a .44 mag load if not more and that WILL go through a deer's lung or two and that's all a broadhead does and many a bow hunter around here fills their kill card every year.

I have taken whitetail in both calibers with handguns. Both did their job well enough. But if you take the time to investigate the damage done, the 45 Longus Coltus wins...

What about the 357 Sig. Pretty close aren't they?

However, neither of these cartidges is really what you want for deer when so many more appropriate cartridges are available. I would at least look at a .30-30 or a .243 (one of my favorite calibers).

So, I have knowledge of the .357 being successful.

Some states like Ill (I think) does not allow centerfire rifles EXCEPT rifles chambered in straight wall pistol cases, possibly he lives in one of these states... I personally chose my 25-06 but have fun with the 44 mag as well

Talking

Ruger Blackhawk Bisley 7 1/2" bbl. 300 grain Buffalo Bore or Grizzly will take even the biggest hogs. in those loads it can exceed a .44 mag and I have a soft spot for the Peacemaker. even if it is souped up.
