But I'm getting ready to start again this fall. I have a couple of new (to me) shotguns I want to try out on them. I'm also looking around for a beagle pup to start training, and think I'll have one next weekend. Of course, this year I'll probably spend a lot more time on him than on the rabbits. But that's fun, too.

Where are you planning to hunt, and how do you go about it?

And welcome to gunandgame, by the way.

Rabbit hunting I think is not a good thing, I raise rabbits and I know how they are and I have learned to love them, I can't see how ayone can kill such a cute little thing for as little of meat they have on them, but thats just me.
Poor things

They have more meat than a chicken, kagome

And I think they taste better, too.

Rabbits in the wild live less than two years, on the average. It doesn't hurt my conscience when I get to one ahead of a coyote, fox, owl, eagle or car on the highway...

Yeah i got a story:

I had seen this jackrabbit go hauling !!! through the pasture. I got my dad to let me out with my 12 guage SxS with full chokes. (We were on our land.) SO I ran for probably 300 yards chasing this thing when he stops in a mesquite. So I was like ok here he goes down. I carefully crept up within 30 yds. and he got spooked. I pulled both barrels of that SxS at the same time and hit him all over. Couldnt eat him. =p

I agree Troy. My sister thinks that hunting anything is barbaric, yet she still buys beef and chicken from the grocery store... I think harvesting the meat you eat is more humane and natural than buying something that was born to be slaughtered.
Just my two cents

Both barrels; Ouch!

Reminds me of the old explanation of elephant hunting:

"A 160-lb Englishman picks up his 16-lb rifle, and fires it at a 2,500-lb elephant. The elephant goes down, and the Englishman goes down. Whoever gets up first is the winner. If neither one gets up, their possessions are divided according to the laws of the jungle."

Maybe you ought to just get yourself a Mosin Nagant. One of those 7.62x54 rounds would kill a jack, clean it, skin it and grind it, all in one shot.

On a more serious note, I hope you weren't running with that SxS locked and loaded...you can't depend on a safety. I grew up with a guy who blew half his face off when he was about nineteen. He hung in until his late twenties, then got so depressed he finished the job.

I was a professional big brother (six younger ones in the family) the whole time I was growing up. And aside from my own sons, I had a passel of foster kids over the years. I open my mouth, advice comes out.

Same, I got like 5 young hunters below me, so they all look up to me for advice, etc. One didn't even know how to strip his gun down, and he was 10!!! I got a 7 year old brother that can strip down a 10/22 in notime. He jammed his shotgun because some1 had welded the shell guide to the frame. (Rem 1100)

I was invited to rabbit hunt on a friends alfalfa fields in the Davis Mountains in West Texas last May. Some may not consider this sporting, but the jacks are so plentiful they destroy the crops. You run over about 5 or 6 every mile getting to the fields. On the last hunt before ours they killed 600 in 2 nights. They have a pick-up with a deck on top with flood lights pointing in every direction. I started using a borrowed AR15 and went thru about 250 rounds. I had limited success, but maximum fun! Then I pulled out the 700 express magnum. Thats the bunnies worst nightmare! We killed about 200 between the 2 of us in about 2 1/2 hours before it got too cold up top. Now I cant wait to go after the fat coyotes this fall!

Wow, how do you deal with the recoil? A .243 55 grain HP does the trick also.

I normally get bout 25 jacks and 50 cottontails per hunt. Just enough to keep it fun.

Here in California, it's also open season/no limit on jacks year-round; they love those irrigated fields!

What's surprising to many people is that those scrawny, bony-looking things are downright tasty eating.

That's a lot more than I've ever gotten

Of course, we used to just go out walking with a .22, and we usually stuck to ditchbanks and weed patches instead of getting into the fields. We also never shot more than what we planned to eat right away.

My Dad was a little rigid on the subject of unneccesary killing. He was fond of saying, "there's nothing wrong with enjoying the hunt, but you don't hunt for enjoyment." He religiously believed you didn't shoot something unless you were going to eat it, or it was about to eat you. Matter of fact, he still believes that now, at 80 years old. But he was a deadly shot in his day.

I get to shoot and trap them all year round, on average I shoot 7-10 a week for me and my dog (well I shoot 4 or 5 and she catches her own)
I also get to shoot a lot of Hares which is great as their my favorite game animal to eat.
