another universal carbine

I went to Knob Creek today and bought an Universal carbine for 350. I want to know if it is the one spring or two springs setup. The serial number is 137xxx. If it is a two spring, i would like to know if I can replace it and get a normal put into it or would i have to replace everything(barrel, springs, etc..). It looks to be in good shape, I got it for 350.

if the operating slide dosen't look like a spot on for the G.I. item probably yes. also take a look at the trigger guard if it is of the wide variety and is not made from metal (ie) aluminum alloy chances are it has the dual spring set up. no it can't be converted as far as i know. i have a few carbines for sale at Knob Creek on consignment that a vendor attending the show, is selling for me. try taking the action out of the stock to check for sure.

Just loosen the screw on the barrel band. Depress the retainer spring and slide the band forward. Then you can lift the action out of the stock. You will be able to see the recoil spring(s) with no difficulty. (make sure the mag is out before you do this)

I have added pictures to see what you guys think it is. The third picture is the slide and I believe that it is the "hole" I hear about that helps the bolt move. But the fourth picture has the so called "hold bolt back" button. Well the wedge holds the bolt back so I figure that is it. On the mag release it has a big M and litte WA. The safety is a flip one and the adjustable sight.

Yours looks like a very late model. Almost none of the parts will interchange with the USGI model. The weak link on yours is the slide. They often break at the hole that goes over the bolt lug. Replacement slides are very hard to find. In addition, those late ones can fire out of battery (without the bolt being completely closed). Be careful with it. And picture 4 shows the slide dismounting notch. It isn't a holdback. It is for disassembling the carbine.

Crap! Then I am getting rid of it because it will just be a pain on the butt to shoot with and I will just save up for an Auto-Ordinanace one to fire with.

food for thought, for what an auto ordnance carbine is going for you can get a fairly decent import G.I. carbine for the same $$$$.

Yeah! I will have to look into that. My next thing is trying to get rid of this gun. I would like to get some money out of it but don't want to sell it to anyone that could get killed or hurt. If I cannot get any money out of it then I will got shotting the !!!! out of it, I guess.

You might be able to check your local nickel saver paper and write in the ad that you are willing to sell your gun plus cash for a USGI Carbine. A local gun shop or gun show sales table may be willing to do the same deal fodr you...the amount of cash you are going to have to give is the variable, good luck on your search.

No one is going to want to trade this rifle for a G.I one and cash. If they know the rep, they will laugh. I found this website called Numrich Gun Parts. I will send them my rilfe and see what I get for it.

Don't send it there unless you have an FFL or send it through an FFL. They can only accept parts form individuals. The receiver would have to be destroyed because they won't send it back! I had it happen to me once. And they will only give you a few cents on the dollar. I wasn't kidding when I said to part it out. You could scrap the receiver and still sell the parts for almost as much as you have in it. There are a lot of those late Universals out there that folks want to get running again.

I've got one just like that and I need a slide for it because it broke, natually. But since I'm not comfortable with the whole firing out of battery idea, I'm not sure if I want to shoot it or not. I'm not sure what to do with mine, either. It's a thorn in my side because I can't get a slide from Numrich and I can't shoot it like it is and I certainly don't have the money to buy a better carbine right now. Ugh... >_<

Dr. Rizz. Most comments are on the money. Suggest you strip it down to basic components and sell it on line. There are a lot of folks out there who need Universal parts. Take anything apart that will come apart. Recoil slide assembly, bolt stop lever, (Receiver, barrel and bolt group (heaspace issues) )stock group, trigger housing and components You get the idea.

I have one and have had no problems thus far. however if anyone wants to give me one for parts you never know when i might need them. the only problem i have had is when loading one round for my grandson. If the bolt cycles all the way back it locks to shoot. Mine has been fitted with a side mount plate for a scope and I am trying to locate the part to mount the scope. That has been an exercise but I am about there.
Seriously, I would entertain having another one. what are these things worth as I have had mine for at least 10 years.

Value depends on whether it is an early one or late one. Early, $300-$350. Late $200-$250.

Unhappy

Send it to me if you want to get rid of it. I will have to get an FFL for you to send it to as I do not currently have one. If anyone else has one perhaps with a part broken which they can not repair let me know.

I could use a front sight as long as the blade hasn't been ground too far down.
