Rem. 700 or Win. 70?

Hi Everybody!

This is my first post here and would like your advice. I would like a .30-06 for everything from Antelope to Moose. I think I have narrowed my search down to either a Rem. model 700 or a Win. model 70. They both seem pretty similar except for the 2 position safety on the Rem. and the seemingly better 3 position safety on the Winchester. What do you guys think about these guns and/or these safety configurations? Thanks!

you might want the contolled round feeding of the model 70 under some circumstances ( assuming you choose one of the "classic" actions models). or you might prefer the remington actions slightly better inherent accuracy - most benchrest shooters do.

tough choice. perhaps just pick the model from each brand you like, then go for the stock that fits you best. stock design can make a big difference when you get to 30-06 and above.

I've been using a Rem 700 with a 3x9x40 scope for three years during deer hunting season. Works well for me. Haven't used the Model 70 Winchester, though. However, I still like my Model 94 Win in 30 cal, too, as an alternate when deer hunting because of it's lightness and convenience.

Both are excellent firearms, and well built. Go look at both, and see what fit's you the best and what options you like.

Both are good weapons. Shop around and buy whatever one you can get the best deal on. I went with the remington as I got a great deal on a Stainless BDL, $300!

Are you able to find a new Winchester? Or are you looking for used?

For a bargain the Rugers are hard to beat.
What ever you get take it to a good gunsmith and get the trigger done,
factory triggers are a joke and your accuracy will suffer.

they both function fine as safety's. dont worry about the so called "inherrent accuracy" of the rem 700. its no better than anything else unless its been fully reworked.

Team green, or team red? This a classic Ford versus GM, John Deere versus International , Mack versus Kenworth. Both are beyond reproach, pick them up in a gun shop, shoulder, point and work the bolt then talk a price. Pick the best one out of that you just can`t go wrong.

Thanks everyone! Thats what I thought the consensus would be. They both are pretty much equal. I will probably just go with the cheaper one then.

The Win M70 Classic with claw extractor would be a decent choice. The Win M-70 with the puny linear extractor isn't my idea of a good system. Remington's C-Clip extractor, while far from the best, is a step up in my opinion. I'd prefer a lever claw extractor like the Weatherby Vanguard myself.

My dad has a Pre-64 in 95% condition in .300 Weatherby. I have never see that gun jam. He takes it pig hunting, elk hunting and deer hunting. he is planning a moose trip in the Yukon next year. I personally shoot M700s, but he swears by the M70 Pre-64. He hit a bull 2 weeks ago at 600 yards. it ran 5 steps and fell. That atests to accuracy.
