I am a long time shotgunner that has finally been invited to go deer hunting (an excuse to buy another gun). I have narrowed it down to either the Remington 700 SPS or a Cabela special package Remington 700 ADL with an OK scope. They are the same price. I understand the ADL is not made anymore and does not have the hinged floorplate or recoil pad like the SPS. Is it worth the extra money to build up the SPS? Both are .270 Win and it'll fire maybe 25 rounds a year.
The floorplate isn't really all that helpful, IMHO. I have a VSS with detach. floorplate and all it does is swing down, with spring and all. It's impossible to load that way.
Don't need the mag to unload it. I just pop the bolt a little and the shell pops into the loading port. Then I tilt the rifle, it falls out, and I do 4 more times. =)
Both would serve you well. And your only going to only put a box or so of rounds through it a year, I say just go ahead and buy which one you like best. The drop floor plate is nice to have, and just another safety, but it's not totally necessary.
I highly prefer the stock of the SPS, and one advantage of the hinged floorplate on a Remington 700 is that it is more standard if you ever want to replace anything like the stock, trigger guard, and such.

I thought I would update everyone. I went with the ADL and have already upgraded the recoil pad and put two boxes through it first day at the range. (may have contributed to my decision to upgrade the recoil pad) I am very happy with the rifle and will be deer hunting in South Texas this weekend. I will report back on success/failure with pics.
