If rock stations selected their playlists by choosing only the singers and bands considered politically correct by conservatives, they'd have had to go off the air back when I was young. They wouldn't have had enough songs to fill the time slots...
That's probably true Troy, but it is still within people's right not to buy and or listen to their music. Or say they are stupid or whatever they want. Same thing with radio stations. Those are free to make their choices too. They had to have known this would happen before they said the things they did.
Besides, rock is always anti-everything. Country is supposed to be about God and patriotism. And losing your wife, kids, house and pickup truck. In the rain.

I agree that people are free to buy or listen to what they like. But I don't see the country stations as innocent in this. I have little doubt the reason the DC's last album dropped off the charts so fast is because it wasn't supported by air time. No exposure, no sales. I see a couple of possible reasons why the stations would do that, and neither is flattering.
One, it could be political censorship by the stations, most of which have been consolidated into big corporations with politically conservative leadership. They're punishing the 'Chicks for not toeing the party line, or they're pandering to the political beliefs of what they consider their core audience instead of to their musical tastes.
Two, it could be conservative political correctness kicking in. That works exactly the same way liberal PC does: a handful of noisy people start whining and crying and carrying on about being "offended," and the stations cave. Just like the liberals, they assume that because the protesters are so noisy they must represent the majority. And heaven knows you don't want to offend the majority; it might be bad for business.
There's a third possibility, which is that so many people are mad at the 'Chicks it would honestly be bad for business if the stations played them. I doubt that one. If they were really such musical lepers, that last album wouldn't have shot to platinum before dropping off the charts.

Matter of fact, I just remembered I have some on ice in the back of my pickup (for real). If y'all will just excuse me for a minute or two, I'll be back. Unless I get tripped by my beagles and die a lonely death in the dark, being licked to death because I've fallen and can't get up...

Grab one for me while you're out there.

While I can see your point, I also saw the local country station get a petition to stop playing the Dixie Chicks, it had nearly 4000 signatures on it, in a town with only 7000 people! That is more than a few!!!

And maybe I'm misjudging popular sentiment, at least in some areas.
But do you really think all those signatures came out of that town of 7,000? Durn near every adult of sound mind would've had to sign it, and some of them twice. I doubt you could get that many folks in town to sign a petition saying the sun should continue to rise in the east.
If the signatures are real, I assume they came from an extended listening area, plus from all the noisy people countrywide who heard of the petition and wanted to put their two cents in.
A Muslim advocacy group started a letter-writing campaign against Bill Handel on KFI a while back, and the station was getting emails from "listeners" in Singapore and Malaysia complaining about how offended they were by the things they heard Handel say. Some of them weren't even in English.
The Dixie Chicks had the #1 song on VSpot for something like 14 strait weeks, and 15 out of 16 weeks. I'm pretty sure it broke the record. The problem is they picked a bad time to say what they did. If you fast forward 3 years, to today, their comments would be right on with how most of the world feels about Bush. Yes, I'm sure you will still find a few towns that hate the Dixie Chicks and think Bush has done no wrong, but I'm also willing to bet you'll find a funny looking boy playing the banjo on the front porch of the general store to.
