Anyone remember this PBS or History Channel Special?

I probably put this in the wrong place, but oh well.

Does anyone remember what the name of that TV Special was where the guy in the 60s or 70s went up to Alaska or something and built a log cabin, spent his last 30 years in the woods alone?

The special showed him fishing, building an natural underground cooler for food, building his log cabin, keeping his fishing hole clear of ice...etc...

The video was taken over the course of a season, i believe, by some somewhat junior videographers and it was mostly narrated and didn't have any actual video sound (that I can remember). The video was mostly grainy and somewhat over-exposed. You could basically tell it was from the 60s or 70s, but it was in color.

Anyone remember that? I want to buy it for my mom for xmas...she would love it. If you know the name or where to get it, please let me know.

Thanks.

The name of it is "Alone in the Wilderness". There is also a book "One Man's Wilderness". I don't know where a guy can buy either of them though. I myself would like to get them. Found the video on tv very interesting. Well hope this helps you some.

I found it. Here is some info if you are interested:

[Outdoors-Magazine.com] One Man’s Wilderness, An Alaskan Odyssey

http://www.amazon.com/Alone-Wilderness-Dic...=UTF8&s=dvd

If you are the outdoorsy type who dreams about a world of peace and protecting the wilderness, this is a great video duo.

There is also a video made 25 years later from the original by the same guy:

Amazon.com: Alaska Silence & Solitude: DVD: Bob Swerer,Bob Swerer Sr.,Dick Proenneke

I never saw this second movie, but no doubt it is probably pretty good and I'll probably like it since I liked the first.

There is a book also you can get on amazon. Search for the first one: "Alone in the Wilderness" and you will find it there.

Pretty interesting stuff no doubt...I am a young guy, wish I were alive in those days.

Thanks for helpin jumpstart my memory. I did a quick search on Amazon & came up with those.

Don't chalk the guy's life up to "those days," Ivan

When he started doing what he did, there were lots of people talking about the good ol' days when someone could do something like that.

If you want to bad enough, you can still do it.

I'd get sick of picking up the left-over toilet paper following the pass-thru of the cross-country skiers, hikers and so forth, not to mention the noise of the ATVers and 4-Wheelers.

Then there is that crap about having to buy a park's pass and deal with the rangers complaining about poaching when you kill an elk for your winter meal or catch more than 2 trout at a time.

Or you could always go way out and end up like "Grizzly Man" being eaten by the creatures you so ignorantly live among and adore.

Besides territories like that where nothing exists besides large predators...I don't really know of any place a person could go and live free of population and free of the IRS.

Gotta admit our govt. has us by the ballz.

That dude was a master carpenter. Watching the section where he made the wooden outhouse door hinges was amazing. Few people do woodwork like that. He made his own lumber. He took nothing wooden with him because he knewhe could make it himself. He also was very very strong for his age and size. He was 50 when he went up there and he was doing work alot of 25 yr olds couldn't hack. In a way he was like a skinny middle aged superman. I wouldn't mess with that dude. He could probably kill you with a toothpick he made.

I bet he had a happy life if nothing else. Has anyone read the Foxfire series?

There is another guy doing a "survival" series that is hilarious. This guy is the most incompetent jerk I've ever seen. In the episode I saw, he spent the better part of 3-4 days trying to catch a rabbit using a fancy little trap that he probably saw in the back of a comic book somewhere. He finally gave up on the rabbit and decided to eat cattail roots which almost made him puke but he choked 'em down anyway thereby giving himself major intestinal complications . He then built a shelter and within a day or two he'd accidentally set it on fire!

I thought how he made his fireplace was really good too. It only took him a couple days to build a real honest to God field stone fireplace and chimney that would have made a stone mason envious.
