Response to "TJ steps down"

First of all, I tried to post a response to the thread Chris started about Rookie Rover stepping down but all I get is I am unauthorized to respond to the thread.

?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ????????????????

Secondly, I hope he (RR) sticks around so we can abuse him whenever we wish, LOL....he he he he.

BTW......I have always wondered...how does one become a moderator?

I am not (blame the ARMY training) one to volunteer but I am always willing to help if asked.

I have not been asked but I see people coming into G&G after some of us older ones and they become moderators.

Then, again, I see newer members becoming VIP Members, etc., with fewer posts than I or others.

Just curious.

I was wanting to post in that thread and it wouldn't let me either. I guess it is restricted to moderator posting only. I did want to say that I think ya did an excellent job TJ, and I hope to continue seeing ya on here.

The VIP indicates that we have paid for a subscription to G&G. If you want to get a paid subscription all ya have to do is go to the "User CP" section and click on the subscription link. I just got mine a few days ago. I figured that as much as I like this site I would contribute a little bit of money to help cover server costs and other expenses so this site stays great.

Thumbs up

I really feel bad about TJ(Rookie Rover) stepping down. He's gonna be missed a lot.

However, out of respect for his decision, let's not make this become an eulogy because I expect him to carry on with his informative and challenging posts. We all have different situations in our lives and we've gotta do what's best in our individual cases.

My thoughts are that a mod doesn't have to step down to scale down his activities on the board. Of course it's always up to the mod. I've had lots of personal demands and the way I see it I give G&G the time I can, and many hands make light work. I like the idea of multiple moderators for each board, that way the workload is spread out and you have better coverage, ie faster responses to issues that come up.

How one becomes a moderator is never a clear cut thing, but it all boils down to the choice of the administrator, Chris. Sometimes people volunteer and are not chosen, sometimes they volunteer and are, and sometimes they're sought out based on their contributions to the discussions.

Remember, not all mods are mods of every forum here. Some cover all the boards but many cover sections or just individual forums. Sometimes this is to keep the sensitive boards to the people with real gifts for dealing with tricky issues while those with particular expertise moderate certain subject boards.

My advice to anyone wishing to be considered is to make the offer and leave it on the table. Perhaps the need will come later. Perhaps you have some ideas on what you could offer in one area or another.

Say, for example, you know very well the legalities of what makes an AK legal or not, ie parts compliance, and what criterias are used by the law to distinguish a legal modification from an illegal one. Such a person would be in a good position to mod the AK forum, so he could edit/delete accordingly. Nothing of that nature belongs on this forum.

My thoughts are that that's the place to start - with the discussions that have brought us here and what G&G is all about, not the piddling matches and insane ramblings that we sometimes get into on the political and off topic boards. I started on the Accessories forum, then was added to several military rifle forums, and then much later was added to the powder keg. Plenty of time to get a feel for it all.

I wouldn't consider it doing a favor to make anyone a moderator, not for any of the right reasons. (Some boards are so tied up in various monies that the mods do a lot of squelching of topics that are critical of certain businesses.) Making someone a moderator is asking them to help with the burdens of running a forum well. Offering and accepting is something to do with sobriety.

TJ, isn't leaving the site. He simply will not have the time to take on the full moderating duties. I didn't go into great details with him out of respect, but is always welcomed back to the site.

As far as getting the V.I.P. Member, that is from purchasing the subscriptions/donations I have for the site. The Respected Member tag, is for those members who have 5,000+ posts.

For applying to be apart of the staff here, I don't have any set qualifications. Most times people send me a private message and we discuss things similar to what BRG3 said. I consult a few respected people and get their opinions, and I make the final decision.

I was going to make an announcement for anyone that would like to become a moderator to please PM me with some basic info, where they would like to moderate, and what they might want to bring to the table.

Mods a tough job. I hit a point where I was in the same boat. I couldn't keep the PM box empty either.

Folks, for one, I am honored to be thought of so highly in the eyes of the member base.

Now, I do feel that I owe some of you (all actually) an explanation.

I don't know how many of you know it, but I also work online, and, in that same line, hunting seasons are winding down in some places, and people are wanting to "trade up" thier hunting arms while the price is lower than it would be any other time of the year. In essence, the market is slightly flooded.

By the gun market being a little.... Filled, it also means my workhours too are filled. This week, I put in a total of 73 hours of work for my paying job... That leaves little time for play, and I had to make a decision on where I could make a little more free time. Unfortunately, I decided that G&G was the one that uses the majority of my time, and it had to take the back burner. It is not that G&G isn't VERY important to me, quite the opposite, I love it, and think it deserves my attention when I can devote more time to it.

Now to clarify a fact. I'm NOT leaving G&G, I'll continue to be a posting member, and I'll continue to laugh at Oxford's groaners. I just had to make some room on the duties that I couldn't put off to a later time.

Now, to my promise to you all. I will be back (providing that my spot is available), spam hammer in hand, ready to obliterate any and all spammers!!! I can't say when, but I do know that it won't be long...

Let the spammers have their fun, because I'll be back...

TJ.

A Mod? who in their right mind would ASK to be a mod?!?! you gotta be nuts. No way no how, Thats like putting a target on your back. OK maybe its not so bad, I have been a mod at a few sites. It isn't all fun and games. Too many folks think you owe them an allegiance, and will side with them in a dispue when you need to remain unbiased. Oh well, my thoughts on the matter. I wish to express my sincere gratitude to those mods and the owner for their work here. OK thats enough !!!!! kissing for now. TJ have fun at work and get back to us when you can. Captain. That is Ox sending you all them corny jokes!! Ash sends the naughty stuff. I am the one that sends you hate mail. LOL See youall in the funny papers.

I, for one of many I suppose, appreciate your presence and your wisdom and insightfulness beyond your years.

I like people who have havos between their legs on issues but I also appreciate it when their views are logical and sensible and aren't rants and raves. That is you.

I hope to see your posts continue. Yepper.....fer sure!

Let me see if I have this right.

If I contribute money I can become a V. I. P. Member even if I had made only a few hundred posts?

And, being a member for the past few years and contribute regularly means I am just a "member"?

I can't even remember being asked to contribute to anything.

I know it was once discussed but I understood Chris to say that IF it came to needing contributions it would be mentioned. I didn't see anything! I was never asked. Oh, well.

It was never publicized, because I was working on trying to offer special deals to folks that contributed as well as use of the classified section. 99% of the people that have V.I.P. icon is we talked in the chatroom. I wanted to be able to offer a contributor a lot more than I have in the past is one reason why I do publicize it.

You must be a member for X amount of days, and X amount of posts to be able to donate as well.

Heh, when I said sobriety, I wasn't thinking in relation to alchohol, I was thinking more of an attitude, a meaning related to humility and caution.
