5.7X28 varmint rifle

Just a thought... but does anyone think that the FN 5.7X28mm round in a custom bolt-action rifle would be a good varmint rifle?

I think that is an excellent idea. I think varminting would be a great use for that round in any suitable action. I'd love to see a simple straight blowback operated carbine chambered for it using FN pistol mags.

Yeah, I like that idea, as opposed to paying the $1400+ for a PS-90.

If I had $1400 spare that'd be high on my list of things I'm on my way to get.
But the round itself is cool. I'd settle for a single shot.

Thumbs up

I've been collecting the brass at my range - SOMEONE has the FN gun! I've voiced the idea to a couple buddies about building a bolt-action around this cartridge. No real advantage over the .22 Hornet (especially the K-Hornet!) but it's such a CUTE little number. It just looks too cool to ignore.
And, I like the oddball guns . . .

TC has barrels for the 5.7x28. Want to try the cal. for varmint and am having one built by the Custom Shop. I'll give it a try and let you know. Seems like a great round for yotes, ground pigs, etc.

I thought about it but it won't equal the hornet and I have decided the way to go would be get a faster twist,(1in12") in the hornet and use heavier bullets for a little more range.I believe the K-Hornet would be great set up this way and still be quiet enough for places where you don't want noise.I hope the ones wanting to try the 5.7 will, but for me the hornet is the way to go. ,,,sam.

Does TC have stock barrels for the 5.7x28 that you no of? What is the cost for a custom barrel if you don't mind me asking? I am interested in a barrel for my TC. as well,I found ammo pretty cheap from the Sportsmans Guide shooter catalog, but is it worth the price of a custom barrel.

I think the T/C idea is a great one. This cartridge has "coyote" written all over it!

I'm thinking the T/C would be an excellent varmint weapon, light and portable, easy to take to the hunt.

No matter how many rifles you have for varmint hunting you can't replace a good 22 in the Hornet range.

Handloads-5.7X28MM

The Nov 08 issue of Shooting Times Favorite Loads. Use small rifle primers, Hornady 35 Gr .224 V-Max bullet, Max 5.9 Gr of True Blue powder, Bullet fps 1,525.---Siierra 40 gr SP bullet , Max 5.2 Gr True Blue powder, Bullet fps 1525. Not as fast as a Hornet , a 22 WMR center fire. The case length is 1.135 inches and holds 14 Gr of water. If CZ made one I would have to try it out. Could be a quiet 150 Yd prairie dog rifle.
