Going to give quitting smoking another shot

I have to get back into shape for fire and I have a lot of oreos and beer that I have to work off not to mention the years of smoking.

Nothing wrong with that sir! I have recently started back into weightlifting and eating right.

There are a few other members that can give you tips if you need any...

A few years ago I was smoking a little over a pack a day. Now I'm down to somewhere between 2-4 a day. However I only smoke when I'm at work, have no desire for one anywhere else.

I've cut WAY back myself. It's not eady, but it's becoming evident that quitting sure has some benefits.
Never mind the fact Ohio just passed a no-smoking law last month and goes into effect tonight at 12:01 AM......

Yup...Ohio passed that law....supposedly we can no longer smoke in the buildings smoker room or anywhere on the premises.

I smoke 2-3 cigars at work everynight.

As security they even told me that smokers are not allowed to even smoke on the premises outside or even in their cars!

Yeah, Like I'm gonna tell them what they can and can't do in their vehicles!

They are supposed to go out on the sidewalk to smoke....I'll be doing extra patrols in the dark part of the parking lot with my lit stogie......

Very supportive 7mm, very nice. Just wondering, is this the way you support people both on and off the net? And before anyone jumps at me for asking this, just want to say this is the second post you've made in this thread, both of which have a smart comment in it directed at SKS. Anyways, SKS, this helped me. I set a time frame in which I wouldn't smoke, like not before 9:00am, and not after 5:00pm. Then it became 4:00pm, then 3:00pm, then 2:00pm. Now I don't smoke after 1:00pm. And with working in between and staying busy, as I said, I'm down to between 2 and 4 cigs a day.

I smoked full time from when I was 13. I gave up for 2 years in the 80`s and like a tool started again. I loved cigarettes, I smoked 40 - 50 a day. Just prior to my 40th birthday, I decided, for a number of reasons, to stop.

DO NOT say, ` Ima try to give up` or ` I`ll see how I go ` or ` I`ll cut down`

You need to think about this a lot to be successful. If you really want to stop, thats what you need to do, STOP. Go over it in your head for a few days, then, say on a sunday night say ` this is my last ever cigarette` get up the next morning, and don`t smoke. If you have made the choice to stop, and commit yourself to doing just that, it`s a lot easier to rebuff the cravings. I used to say to myself ` you can want one all you like, but you aint gettin` one `

You must be committed. Go in half arsed and you`ll fail.

Some people need some aids to stop, the nicotine gum works best I feel, it tastes like crap, but will take the edge off and its a tangable thing ` I`m chewing this god awful peice of crap instead of smoking ` patches, I`ve yet to see work. I am convinced the patches contributed to my fathers heart attack, he was smoking those 2 mg kiddie cigs that are like a breath of air near a campfire, and then he sticks a full strength patch on 24 /7 thats like smoking cigars all day drawing back.

regular gum helps, even though you`ll bite the inside of your mouth and tongue a bit, and the sugarfree stuff will get you trotting to the toilet if you over indulge ( weightloss! free bonus ! )

Don`t think you can reward yourself after going a day without a cigarette by bumming one off a friend, if you do, go buy a pack cause you`ve blown it and need to start again.

It is hard, but not impossible. You CAN do it.

It will be one of your greater achievements, do it soon.

It`s coming up to 4 years since I stopped. I`ve not regretted it.

Remember nobody likes a quiter LOL. I have quit from time to time so I reckon it was more like a break. The surprising thing is I have cut way back since I have been here this time around a pack will last me 1 1/2 to 2 days. Of course they are only a buck a pack here if you can smoke HAJI smokes. Good luck with the quitting and hopefully I will be right behind ya.

Thumbs up I've been quit for ten years, come February

It's the second time I really did it successfully, instead of just cutting down or quitting for a few days.

The first time lasted a few years, and I was pretty much a snot about it. What was the problem with all the people around me who couldn't quit? Were they wusses, or what? I mean, all it takes is a little will power...

Then one night I was in a bar; a guy's cigarette smoke drifted under my nose and I asked, "hey -- can I bum one of those?" A week later I was buying my own again, and it took me years to successfully quit again.

I'm a lot less snotty, a lot more humble and a whole lot more sympathetic to others this time around.

The thing to remember, SKS, is that there's a fine balance point between smoking or not smoking. Your job is to keep the balance tipped just a little bit toward the non-smoking side. And the craving for a cigarette comes in huge, strong waves, but recedes after a little while until the next time. Take it fifteen minutes at a time if you have to, and start over at the end of that fifteen minutes. The longer you stay quit, the longer the time between those crashing waves of craving will stretch, and the weaker they'll be.

After a while you'll wake up some morning, and while you're brushing your teeth you'll say, "I'll be !!!!ed. I didn't even think about a cigarette yesterday...kewl!"

SKS...I also am going to try and stop. I hate smoking...I really do. Gets in my hair ruins my perfume. My lungs are almost gone. I signed up for yoga class and will soon be starting that and I am going to get myself back in shape too. It is so bad for you, I quit once and then went on a vacation to the islands with a girlfriend and she smoked me out so bad I couldn't stand it, so I said give me one and have been smoking since. I think I might try that nicorderm or whatever the gum is called to help the cravings. Lady Di
