Well, if the you know what hits the fan have a drink in my memory. I live less than 10 miles from the White House. If someone sets off a nuke or dirty bomb in DC I'm screwed. The only bug out info that will do me any good is stuff related to natural disaster, civil unrest and the like.

Get a contamination suit for you and your family, like on Jarhead.

The whole idea of bugging out is that it is a last ditch thing. You'll never know what is coming - that's why they are disasters. We can only prepare for general things, and then try to adapt and overcome the specific threat.
So I'll keep my BOB packed, keep my homestead preps going, and try to get beyond whatever might happen. Yep, we'll probably all die in a nukecaust - but we don't have to sit down and take it like sheep.

Yeah, just waiting for those Iranians to come try to invade Texas. I'll get some nice target practice in during that year. =D

he he I love Texas....wasn't born there, but I'm getting there as fast as I can!
I agree that buging out is an absolute last resort thing. No sense in abandoning your home if the disaster isn't threatening to wipe your house out. It is safer to stay put where the supplies are. Now, if you are living in downtow Atlanta, start running. If the local PD don't get you, they criminals will....or is that the other way around? |

Can we make this a sticky? This is a thread I think should stay here, it has a lot of good info in it, except the last couple pages... But the 'contents of your BoB" parts are great.

Personally, I would start filling sandbags and barricading doors so I could hold off an attack till the bombers came. The best thing to do will be get all your buddies and their families that know how to shoot and arm them. 15 guns are better than 1.

I see two main options in Bug Out Bag setups.
1) The basic "get home" bag kept in our vehicles - enough gear and supplies to be able to hike back home with, if the vehicle is broke down or stuck in a jam. This will be equipped according to the type of terrain and territory you have to make your way thru. Urban, rural or a mix? What distance you are figuring on too. For me, it would mean an averge of ten miles or so, of mixed light-urban and rural. We aren't a "big city". Figure a good day's hike, maybe one night spent "on the road".
Second would be the big Bug Out - your AO is threatened with massive destruction (ala Katrina-type event), and you need to get out now! This would be a longer term affair, needing more supplies. Again, the area will determine what you need to carry. I don't need to worry as much about cold-weather gear as our more northerly folks do. I can also stick mostly to forested areas well up into Georgia. Less chance of hostile actions that way.
The big thing about Bugging Out though - have a set destination! If you know you have friends&family waiting for you with food and stuff, you aren't so constrained. If the distance is great, you might find places to set up caches of supplies along the way - use them as you make your way to safety.
Lots of options here!

The other thing you need to remember about buggin in or buggin out is how old you are how old your kids are.
You really don't need to dragging your two year old son out in the elimantes. They are not as strong as you are.

Iran is probably not going to invade anytime soon.
