Bug out bag, lets discuss

I really don't see a survival type section on the forums, so lets see if we can get some use from this thread. I've always seen pictures and discussions about having a BOB(bug out bag) ready for a SHTF type situation. Be it a terrorist attack, or some type of natural disaster, whatever could cause you to leave your home at a moments notice. So I got to thinking today, maybe I should work on two bags for me and my wife. My plan would be to grab the bag, some type of ammo container for my AR, and of course my AR. For an ammo container/carrier, I'm thinking of buying 2 or 3 SAW mag pouches. They hold 6 30 round mags, and I'm pretty sure I could rig something up to allow me to carry one or more of them around my neck/shoulder. This would give me 180 rounds, plus a 30 round mag in the gun, so 210 total. That should do me for a few days until help arrives or I find a place to hold up. Now we come to the bag itself, what should one carry in the bag. Well, this is what I was thinking:
Blanket
Extra pairs of socks
A knife with a serrated edge
First aid kit
Water
Energy bars
A handgun with at least 3 extra full mags
Flashlight with extra batteries
Light sticks
Water proof matches
Small radio with extra batteries
Toothpaste/Toothbrush
Leatherman
I'm thinking this would be a good starting point. While its not everything you would need, I'm also thinking of using this for trips too, something to throw in the back of the car just in case. So, what does everyone think? How would your pack look?

Edit... After thinking about it, I wonder if a signaling device, some rope, and some Germ X hand sanitizer should also go in it.

Hey Pred great start. I would carry the Handgun, versus packing it and add some sort of water purifying system, Iether tabs or a small filter kit. Also some thing to increase hygene, nothing causes disease faster than being nasty. Maybe increase the food rations to two or three days worth.

Trash bags
Panty hose
Mirror
Whistle
Machete
Magnifying glass
Lighter
poncho
Duct tape
Razor blades
Isopropyl alcohol
Nutrigrain bars
saw
flashlight
gum
1 litre of water
Cigarettes
Flares/flare gun
Extra socks and shirt
Toothbrush

And the most important item you'll ever need especially if you don't have it

TOILET PAPER. At least one roll. Two if you've got the space.

For food I'd figure say 4-5 granola bars a day(or some high calorie type bars). So say I needed enough for 72 hours, your talking 12-15 bars. Some sort of water purification system would be nice though. A three day supply of water will be about 15lbs I think. Maybe a roll of TP to increase hygene. I'm thinking keep your butt and mouth clean, and stay dry and you will be fine for a few days, maybe a week. I keep going back to leaving the gun in the bag, and heres why. If I had to leave my house in a matter of minutes, I know theres going to be stuff I would forget, or go to grab and get involved in something else. Atleast this way I know I've got it, and can then pull it out and keep it ready.

Last time we had a scare, I went and spent about 500 dollars on ammo and flash lights batteries Etc. Since I moved into my new house, I know were the ammo is, but that is about all. Now my Mom has a plastic garbage can filled with stuff.. water... food.. toilet paper..batteries 3 day supply. I once spent over a thousand dollars on this boxed food that you boil in water. Good idea, I need to make a list out and stock up on emergency equipment and survival gear. Lady Di

For those interested in survival, here are some good forum sites:

Frugal Squirrels:
Frugal's Forums

Survival Monkey:
Survival Monkey Forums

The Survival Forum:
SurvivalForum.com

Each has good info on BOB's, the idea of and pros&cons of bugging out, etc.
Also excellent info on home canning and storage of food, info for getting "off the grid" with generators and solar power, etc.

Go easy on political discussions though - there are some radical card-carrying LIBERALS on some of these sites. I avoid the political forums, and focus on the good info.

Interesting that some of you never mention a handgun. Do you plan on just grabbing one before you leave? Not take one with you?

My firearms are in the "other bag". I live so close to DC that if anything happens I will either be one of the first to die or the roads will be so clogged it's better to shelter in place. I keep by go bag in my car trunk, the "other" bag is at home.

No bug out bag here.

I figure I will take whatever I need from those that aren't prepared. LOL

right on, right on!!!! I like this subject!!!

The water filter is a darn good idea - you can go alot longer without food than you can without water!!! I went ahead and bought the MIOX purifier, cost 120 dolla, but well worth it come shtf. I've tried it a couple of dozen times and it is well worth the money. All you need to replace is the batts and salt - badda-bing-badda-boom.
My handgun is on my list with spare mags and bullets.
My 12 ga is on the list also, with lots of "00" to go around.
Food is MRE's in the go bag and long term storage food in the 5th wheel.
I hope I have enough time to back up the truck and hook up the 5th wheel - then we could last alot longer with what I have prepped in the camper!!!!

If I don't have to bug out, I'll be pulling duty looking out for them types like Dale. LOL, no really.

Exclamation

As important as what to carry is, where to go? The basic "Bug out to the hills" idea will be shared by a few thousand other evacuees. Make sure to have a realistic destination in mind. Otherwise, the folks living in those hills see you as just another locust among the swarm!

Maybe we should have a "SURVIVAL forum"? This could be a very popular topic.

I had thought about suggesting a survival section, but was not for sure how many people would join in.
