Opening a can of ammo

I just received a Spam can full of ammo, and am now wondering how best to open the thing... I heard some cans are shipped with a key similar to a military (heavy duty) opener, but this one doesn't have one (at leas t on the outside!)...

Rather than use a blowtorch to melt the solder, I thought I'd ask the respected members of this list to render some advice (just kidding about that blowtorch thing...).

Thanks!

Start a hole with a screw driver or chisel. Get out the tin snips and start cutting. Also, keep in mind you don't really need to open the entire thing. Just enough to empty the ammo out.

Shoot it open!

JUST KIDDING.

I used a nail punch. All I could find at the time.

The last one I bought came with a can opener. It took quite a while to get it open. Hated it.

Thumbs up

I use Jerry's method - chisel and tin snips. Works for me!

As in my Military Surplus Ammunition post, I used a chisel with some success, the one time I purchased canned ammo. I'm sure I'll have some coming my way this Christmas, as that's what I asked for from my parents. *grin* Hungarian Heavy Ball. Nice copper-washed.

once ya get one of those big soviet can openers just keep it in the tool box and ya wont have Any problems opening the big cans again.
there used to be a wire/with T handles that you could pull and open the tin that way.
I would suggest NOT heating the can.

A guy at my local gun shop where I bought my 91/30 gave me a big, rusty can opener. It made short work of the spam can.

One of those 4" grinders works great

Grind the top of the lip, though; don't try cutting INTO the can. That could get exciting...

Just got back from Harbor Freight. Bought a pair of tin snips, and opened the spam can like a can of sardines! Worked like a charm. $8.00!

The Bulgarian MilSurp has a pull ring (and brass cartridge cases). $29.95 for 300 flames at AIM. Good stuff.

I just recived some hungarian yellow/silver tip in a soldered silverish spamcan
and had to use a screwdriver a ball-peen hammer and tin snips. it took about 6 mins to open quarter way but managed to get all the ammo out. Now i cant wait to shoot it and feel the difference from the czech silvertip ammo!!

Wheres superman when you need him??
