I'd check any surplus or Wolf/Olympic/etc... that you may have here before wondering if it's magnetic or not, as they check that: 7.62x54r Ammunition Evaluations

Only if you all knew what I have to go through to shoot. I live in Romania. $1,000 bucks a year. Don't even get to go but every couple months, limited ammo (can't acquire it locally), and very restricted rules on the types of weapons used. I LOVE THE U.S.!!!!!!!

My OOPS; I just ordered a box!
Oh well, it stores well for a good long time...

I'll call Sportsman's Guide on Monday and see if they have anything they can swap it out for, as I already have steel ammo.

Hey guys... if you go check out the link I posted, you'll find that both the 180 gr SP and 150 gr FMJ Wolf Gold/Privi Partizan have bullets that are listed as non-magnetic. I'm pretty sure most of us can get ahold of that, also. Plus, since the case is brass, the rangemaster can't 'accidentally' catch the steel case and reject it. Not only that, these are boxer-primed, so they can be reloaded.

I've reloaded Wolf Gold, Igman, Winchester, and Seller & Bellot. They all work great as reloadable brass. The Igman is said to be a little flakey as far as load accuracy, but seem group just fine at 100 yards. At $8.95 a box (at AIM) they are about the cheapest reloadable brass. On the down side I did have 2 rounds out of 60 that had split necks after the first firing. None on the following reloads (after trimming).

Brown Bear is Berdan primed, non-corrosive, in SP and FMJ lead core. I have measured and decapped several random rounds and this ammo is very consistant. It cycles almost as smoothly as brass (varnished steel) and at $6.95 a box (20) it's almost as cheap as reloading.

For corrosive MilSurp the Czech Light Ball is very consistant (as measured for ogive and powder loads) as well, but does tend to cause bolt stick and is a steel-core bullet.

Now, I completely understand the situation, but does everyone have the same issue at a public range, and if so, outside of attempting subtrifuge (lay out some commercial $30/box ammo on the bench and hide the milsurp in a pocket), how do you get around this? I thought about pulling the bullets from all the surp ammo, but it's an additional expense in both $ and time. What do you all shooting at a public range.
I *could* go to BLM land and shoot, but that's an hour and a half away (the range is 20 minutes).

Thanks guys!

Well... you have two strikes against you. Your in California, as I am, and your shooting at a public range. Also, your range officer maybe under pressure by management or other members. I belong to a private range and we have no metal targets or metal target stands. Our's are all wood and we use card board to staple our targets on. Some of us will bring our own metal dingers to shoot at, but that's the extent of it.

Pretty sure this should be asked as a seperate thread, but I'm not aware of any. I only know of gunshow rules, such as they have to be sheathed if on the firearm or if they are integral, such as the M44, they must be folded back. Those are self-imposed rules by the group that puts on the show, not laws.
