Dumbest thing you've ever seen around firearms.

Whats the dumbest question/action you have ever seen about/around firearms?

For me it was probably when I showed someone the casing from my first deer and they asked me why I kept the bullet and how I got it so clean. (It was just the casing, they thought the entire thing hit the deer bullet and all.) I laughed quite hard.

A guy that I went to school with (jerk!), pulled into his driveway one night while drunk. He came in too fast and ran into the planter. His loaded and cocked pistol(unknown caliber or type)fell off the dash and when he grabbed for it, he shot himself in the belly. He lived but lost part of his colon. I've also had a guy ask me if my M-44 was an AK-47.

Kid at school was talking to a group of students in my classroom about how big a "sniper" rifle bullet was. (Showing them like you would with your hands how big a fish you caught was) he showed the bullet as being about a foot long.

i didnt say anything, just laughed silently.....

Dumbest thing I ever saw was the young man who loaded and shot his muzzle loader, and forgot to remove the ramrod from the bore. He touched it off before we saw and could stop him.
The aluminum ramrod went sideways thru the target backer, then into the 100 yard berm - it was mangled. The young man was a bit mangled too. The extra mass caused heavy recoil- busted his nose. Lotsa blood, made a mess of his T-shirt.
He was supposed to get married the next day - his young lady was very PO'd.

The rifle was okay . . .

wow, very impressive big dog. There was a kid I used to go to church with and he was telling me about how he killed a deer iwth his mak-90. well Most Missourians do this stuff so I didn't take any note about it And I told him that I would hunting with my sks. Then the kid told me that the sks was the same as a mak-90 because it shot the same round, I told him " yes they do both shoot the 7.62X39, but the sks is a completly different gun than yours." but the knid who will remain namelessstill thinks that a mak-90 is the same as an sks.

1981, Ft. Dix NJ. As a Drill Sergeant I was assigned as a Range Safety Officer during one of the Rasic Rifle Marksmanship training days. Young female soldier came up to be cleared off the range, I looked hard at the rifle to see if it was ready to be cleared. It was not, bolt was forward, magazine in rifle and rifle on auto fire. I raised my arms and started to tell the soldier what she needed to do to become safe and ready to be cleared from the firing line, at that time she pulled the trigger and shot thru my shirt just under my right arm, in fact it burnt my shirt.
There was only 3 rounds left in the magazine and they all went thru my shirt, at this time I was scared and mad, I hit her on top of her helmet with the cleaning rod I used to check the rifle bores. In fact I broke the first cleaning and picked up another and broke it also, at this time the other Drills and range personnel arrived and got me away from her.
I had to take a couple of days off and reevaluate my carrer as a Drill Sergeant at that time.

Danged unlikely, but not impossible. But if it is true, he had no business pulling the trigger at that distance.

The dumbest thing I ever heard was in a gunshop a year or two ago, when a guy picked an SKS off the rack, showed it to his girlfriend and told her, "this is an AK47. Biggest piece of crap ever made; jams every time you turn around."

Thumbs up

Gotta remember this, though. Everyone had to start their gun knowledge somewhere. Be patient with newbies. Most will grow their gun knowledge quickly if they aren't put down by a few gun snobs/know it all's. Give them as much information as they're ready for and before long they'll be answering other newbies questions correctly. Just takes time.

Remember...most of us were newbies once.

When a kid was trying to tell me he had an M60, RPG, a "sniper", (slave trader!) and an M1a1 abrams tank. I laughed and walked off.

2 People I know personally, have accedentally shot themselves. First guy, was ex army, he was hunting a wabbit with this peice of crap semi auto .22 I forbade to be loaded in my presence after it spontaniously discharged into a freezer at the camp. Why it was loaded I don`t know, but it shouldnt have discharged like it did. Guy sneaking up on the wabbit ( being vewwy vewwy qwiet.. ) went to step over log and splat! One yellow jacket into the top of the foot. Ouch. Made a tiny lil hole in the top of his boot, smashed his foot up real good though. He was probably 40 miles from even rudamentary first aid too. Sucked to be him.

Second guy, .243 point blank into his thigh. That was really disturbing for all involved. He was even further from help, was rushed to a one horse town, then into a police car for a high speed run to a paramedic station about 60 miles away. He lived, kept the leg, but 25 or more years later doesnt like to talk about it. Can`t blame him really. would have over 2 hours minimum, before he got any kind of atttention bar a couple tee shirts wrapped around it. He was in considerable pain. Lesson? Be carefull...

It is important to remember that there are many many people that have an incredible desire to "know" about firearms, yet they do NOT.
when someone begins to speak about a gun in a fashion that is totaly incorrect it is because they them selves have been greatly impressed by someone that spoke to them and want to be like that.
The problem is that many times if ya try to correct them with the correct information they can emotionally freak out.
I used to have guys come in my shop and wax rapsodic about the silliest things,
it is kinda sad when ya think about it.
There is not anything wrong with not knowing and asking questions.
What is embarassing is when a LEO or someone that is in a professional position speaks about firearms and is completly off the map from common truths and common knowledge.
Ya have to be careful about that because there is a lot of personal pride involved.
To go and correct a Cop or other professional person,.... can REALLY pi$$ them off.
In these modern times where a Policeman could be expected to arrest anyone on any thing they can think up,... it is not wise to correct them.
yet again and again so many are placed in a position to where they have to explain or teach others, and they havent a clue about it.

I have found that with a little gentle "steering" of the conversation it is possible to make your point with the least amount of their ego bloodshed.

firearms knowledge is a very Emotional thing for a lot of guys.
Appearing to not know can be a very stressful thing for them.

Had a kid way back in highschool shoot himself in the leg with a .22. Apparently it went into his leg and out his wrist. Magic bullet I guess. But he had a cast on his leg and one on his lower arm for about 3 months.

Also had an idiot in basic training get ready to walk off the BRM range with an extra round in his pocket, went to tell the drill "no brass, no ammo" when a round popped out of his pocket and I got to see a drill really go off.

That reminds me of how a friend shot himself in the leg.
Him and his brother had old 22s and they wanted to have some fun with them. So they pinned it between 2 bricks (rim facing up?) and dropped a cyndarblock on them to make them go off. All fun for them till his brother did something wrong and ended up with a .22 in his calf.

That's cause they did it wrong. You stick a .22 shell in a plastic straw and throw it as high as you can on a solid surface. Before it hits, run like he-ll. This in no way safe or recommended by the management.
