7mm...
Geek Squad would not put Mcafee, Norton, and Trend all the same on the computer. You would have prolly gone with just one of those. If they did put all that on your computer, they did you a de-service.

Honestly you should only use one firewall. When you multiple firewalls they can conflict with each other and then stop working. That may have been how they got in. And don't forget to shut off that crappy Windows XP SP2 firewall.

I attribute this type of thing to "User Error"

Just like a person who drives a car and doesn't pay attention to the mileage...it needs a tune-up once in a while. Without it, yer gonna get a break down eventually.

Virus programs are overrated. If ya know how to change your computers 'oil' once in a while, you rarely get a problem.

Geek Squad...PFFFT...over-priced rip off if you ask me. It's like taking a Yugo to a Mercedes shop with mechanics not fit to repair a moped. They also try to sell you unecessary craap.

All you have to do to protect yourself is buy a router with a firewall, go in and set up MAC filters, which will only allow your computer to access your network or home computer. Check your log once in a while to see if anyone tries to connect. If you see that someone does...you can 'ban' their IP or MAC address from your network, making it pretty much inpenetrable to get into your computer.

Another thing you can do, pull the network cable from the back of your modem or router when you aren't using it. That way your computer will only be connected when you are actually using it. You don't have to worry about restarting it everytime, you can leave it running. XP auto-detects network connections without needing to restart.

You also need to make sure your remote access is de-activated as well as Active-X control is de-activated, until you need it !

How many people do you know actually know what you are talking about when you say a MAC address? Active-X? How many people know how to configure their router to block incoming traffic?

Geek Squad offers peace and mind of having your computer issues taken care of. We all can't be experts on everything.

Chris, this is the truth. yeah sure, you can have everything for free, IF! you are an expert. I`m not saying I don`t have software that didnt cost me anything, but the things that matter I pay for.

McAfee will not install if there is another virus protection onboard, it won`t tolerate a shred. It`s like a new wife exorcising all traces of the old wife outa the house.

I have my firewall set to TIGHT, it can be a tad intrusive and I have to accept or deny pretty much everything, but thats okay by me.

You learn as you go, 3 years ago I unpacked this thing from the box and knew less than nothing, now I`ll go into the registry and poke around if needed to get rid of stuff, though since I bit the bullet and reformatted that`s not happened to often.

People who do what Geek Squad says they can do is not what I am saying is Bad. I am saying Geek Squad is part of Best Buy and Best Buy is overpriced when it comes to service, and their technicians are hardly highschool graduates.

There are plenty of small-business, private computer service technicians who offer a much better service than Geek Squad for a lower price.

Also, if you don't know what something is when it comes to computers, look it up on Wikipedia. It will tell you what it is.

When you unpack a Modem or a Router, open the Manual, it usually takes you step-by-step on how to set up filters, passwords and protections. You don't need to be an expert, all you have to do is follow written and graphic directions. I would hope that everyone here is able to do that. If you can't, well I have to say that you need to get rid your guns, because you are going to hurt someone.
