Exclamation 10/22 won't fire help!!!!

Need some help!!! Something has come loose from the safety, or broken. It doesn't click back and forth when pushed. Instead it just slides back and forth freely. The safety is enguaged because the trigger will not pull. I have not had the gun apart as to yet, wanted to get some input from some people with more knowledge and experience than I have. My question is, is this a very big deal to fix on my own or should I take it to my gunsmith?

90% of the time, it is a cleaning issue, since .22 ammo is dirty. IF you have the tools and feel confident that you can dissassemble and re-assemble the gun properly, then I say go for it, Take your time and lay out all the parts in order. You can pull the trigger mechanism pretty easily and check the unit out after cleaning. there is an internal spring detent that makes the safety click, It may just be crudded up.
IF you don't have the proper pin punches etc. then, take it to a Gunsmith!

Thumbs up

Don't always need pin punches. I only finally did my trigger polish job because the whole thing fell out one day during cleaning - the pins just slid out!
It's been awhile since I've been into it, but IIRC, the safety lever can become misaligned. You won't know til you get in there, but it isn't difficult. Might be a broken part. Nice time for some basic upgrades . . .

you are going to have to take apart the trigger guard assembly to find out what wrong. whether or not you need a gunsmiths help is dependent on your comfort level of doing it. these come apart very easily, but putting your first one back together can be a little tedious. if your mechanically inclined it should not prove to be overly difficult. worst case scenario- you get it apart and cant fix it or get it back together. then you put all the little parts in a zip loc baggie and head to your favorite local gunsmith.

my second analysis of this is that you probably twisted the safety button 180 degrees out of whack. this would block the sear and allow it to slide back and forth without clicking as it goes through the detents.

That was an easy problem to fix. Lefty O was correct. Safety had gotten twisted 180 degrees. All i had to do was twist it another 180 degrees and it snapped back into place. Now I am back in business, shooting dime sized 5 shot groups at 50 yards. thanks to all who replied.

another tip....to remove the safety, twist 180 degrees and pull out...STOP..STOP..STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The point of this information is to also let you know there is a spring and cap under the safety that will FLY OUT when you remove it.
It is a ROYAL PAIN to get it back in place....

So heed these words of advice...NEVER REMOVE YOUR SAFETY BUTTON FOR ANY REASON....
