Yeah, they are underrated. They are surprisingly useful. You'll get a lot further on one then just walking and all. But I do want to say, I would really prefer not to use myself to do the work if I can avoid it. However, the bike is definately something you could use.

And don't forget the virtues of pine knots as a fuel source. They're easily found in almost all parts of Arkansas. Them there pine knots shore do work good.

Hm. Probably a horse. My bugout plan is to go to a ranch, and thats 90 miles away. When both of our cars get 25 mpg, and one is a diesel, it works out pretty good. Plus 900 gallons of diesel at the ranch so lol.

When the time comes when there is no more gas and you flip the light switch and nothing happens then maybe a horse is your best bet. Long before cars were ever dreamed of there was the horse. Goats are a great way to travel with lots of goods. People who do several week long adventures in the desert love to go with a heard of goats. They carry supplies, provide milk and meat, and give you something to talk to when you are going mad. They are really popular in the Oregon/Utah deserts.

I don't think that it will happen in our generation, but the next better find an alternative fuel. Last time I read up on the subject I think it said there was about enough petrol to last another 50 years and then it will be gone. Lots of cars are running on propane and propane accessories now a days and propane will be around for a very long time.

I'm kinda surprised no one mentioned a couple of cows and/or steers. Horses are pretty good at finding forage, and certain cattle here today can get by on stuff most cows wouldn't touch. Cattle are strong and some are close to drought-proof, too.
Can't recall the name of the breed but they come from the U.S. Virgin Islands and they are tough cattle. They even eat thorny bushes and have no problem making it in drought conditions. I seem to recall they cost about $800-$1000 each and are pretty common in the south. Besides the obvious reasons for having cattle, you also get the leather after they are butchered.

Them pine knotts and harden pine sap would burn hotter than a nucular power plant melt down.
My neighbor has a broken down lawn tractor in his scrap pyle, If he'll let me have it I'll convert it to steam power and I'll have me a survival ride.

Not a SHTF question but more of a routine evac question. Would I have any problems traveling with an assult riffle and around 200 rounds in the southern region? I live in Louisiana and often have to evac because of hurricanes. Of course the gun will be in a case and seperate from its ammo. I will have my 9mm riding up front with me. We usually goto Texas and I don't think I will have anything to worry about there.

Im looking for answers about high cap mags, # of rounds in your vehicle...limitations on these. Thanks

You do the steam powered tractor thing and I'll take one of them old washing machines from the front yard and convert it into a fully automatic weapon, to mount on your tractor.

Steam power doesn't have the strength/weight ratio to power an automobile, especially off-road. It's twice as efficient as IC, so if it would work it would be quite the solution to a lot of problems.

JBS One last thing...The last time I went possum hunt'in my old buddy and I drove around to all the know persimmon tree's long about 2 AM one morning and we found an ole sal eat'in away on them ripe simmons so my old buddy grabed his 22 and shot her.
When he reached down to throw her in back of my truck about 15 babys started comeing out.
I exclaimed OH NO what we do with them and that old F__T said ..........

Last time I went possum/coon huntin'...got so blind a_ _ drunk on wildcat, stayed out all night, lost my truck and ended up in bed with another guys wife. Found muh truck two days later, they divorced and she became muh main squeeze for a while. But I had to leave the state in front of 2 game wardens, and went back to Texas for a while, got married to the meanest woman in Texas, had a kid, we divorced and I went back to Arkansas.

An electric powered bike with four wheels, and goats to pull it, [ if the battery dies] and for food if necessary. I too am a monkey, B/D, and a horse would be good as long as there is grass to eat. But goats will eat paper if they have to. Trying to get out of the city in a car at the last minute would be a disaster. Could you imagine the lines, and as the gas stations run dry, you better be ahead of them in that bike, man. They are making some really nice four wheeled bikes with trailers these days. The solution is to be out there BEFORE it happens.
