Most vehicles would go between 200 and 450 miles on one tank. I would say that is a fairly good distance if you are trying to evacuate your existing location. Hopefully most people keep their tanks above half-full.
I'd drive as far as I could on what fuel I had, if I couldn't get more, I would abandon the vehicle and go via MTN bike from there. Because most vehicles nowadays are without a locking gas cap, syphoning others' fuel is not out of the question. I figure if they are not on the road with that vehicle already, by the time I need the fuel, then chances are that vehicle is not needed anyway. I wouldn't steal from vehicles I think may be needed by someone, though.
Horses are a good alternative. Cheyenne, WY is under 100 miles from me, and is along one of my evacuation routes, so I guess I could stop there & pick one up if needed.
Also, raiding neighbors' or peoples' sheds for lawnmower fuel is a good way to get some quickie gas in a hurry. It's also something most people probably wouldn't think of doing.

I think the horse would be the best. However, they are not the best over uneven terrain. I think the Mountain Bike would probably be the best overall.
You also have to feed a horse. Regardless of how many Duke movies you watch, there isn't much hay or grass to be had in the southwestern states when you are trying to evacuate the suburban areas and then find yourself in the desert.

I thought we had the vast hay fields of New Mexico. I mean hay as far as the eye could see and enough to feed horse and man. I'm being stupid. Yeah, feeding is a concern. It would be nice to not have to do manpower but I don't think it could be avoided.
I guess I am Gonna have to Rope and break a Moose....They can go anywhere and they eat willow leaves and branches year round....And the Antlers make a great Gun Rack !!! (At least Until I get me a STILL going for fuel, or build a steamer car of Some sorts.)

I was actually serious about the goats. A few folks on one of the Survival Forums I surf suggested them. They can wear packs, to help carry gear and supplies. They eat virtually anything - easier to feed than many critters. They can be used for milk and meat.
I wasn't saying you weren't I was just trying to lighten things up. A dog could also work. It was used by natives prior to the horse and when doggie couldn't go any longer. It was dinner time. Though, I think I would prefer the goat in that aspect.
Subaru Outback with a bicycle. Good fuel efficiency and excellent off-road ability short of jacking a vehicle up. Wouldn't last forever under heavy duty, but for a period of SHTF I think it would do.

Depends on where I need to go. Have a horse and am looking at adding some donkeys to the mix for a couple of reasons - they provide some darn good security - if they don't know a person, that person s in for a really big surprise, also good for coyotes and other critters it sees as a threat to the herd. They can haul alot of food, water, ammo and other stuff as well.

I think a horse and some goats would be a good idea. The horse will eat grass and find water, so will the goats and they can be used for food and milk. A bicycle would do also it is 99.98% efficient.
Don't rule out a diesel. You can drain fuel oil from home heating tanks, kerosene if you can find it and even vegetable oil in a pinch. When all else fails, the bicycle in the back.
I think a bicycle is one of the most underestimated disaster resources in existence. Anyone spending thousands on ammo and guns should make sure they have about $200 worth of bicycle per person.
