We had a mini SHTF when Hurricane Katrina hit.

It just isn't the fall of government...it's the fall of man when he let's it happen.

Partial melt down of society. People still survive even after the worst. I think these days will be referred to as the good old days before China, Iran, North Korea, etcetera sent up a dozen missles loaded with kevlar ball bearings into space and denonated it, which will eventually knock out a lot of out high tech age.

ALL societies fail and fall - the PEOPLE live on and eventually develop another high society. Ours will go down the toilet in time - maybe sooner maybe later.
Reading lately of the realities behind US and world finance - I expect it'll be sooner . . .
When the financial system fails, then world and local economies fail - then the governments fail as the people revolt, not getting their piece of the entitlement pie. The pieplate is empty and the trucks ain't coming.

A time of total anarchy prevails for awhile.

Then we begin the slow march back up the hill . . .

True and I think economics are the most likely problems we will face soon. Not really too concerned about the nuke, more worried about when the dollar becomes unstable. Doesn't seem to be too far off.

Well, I never said we wouldn't survive. However, it will be the largest scale thing to hit anywhere. It will cause many problems. Fewer here then perhaps Europe, a much larger group of welfare states that don't really get along. The US, also, will suffer in that time. People will survive. In fact, I think people will be around for a very long time. Will I be one of them is the important question. I don't think so really. I would like to survive but there are serious limitations. I'm diabetic. It is tough. I don't see much of a way around it. I stock up on insulin but even if I had enough that would make a 2 year time limit (expiration and not one of those don't worry about it expirations.) Personal production is possible but not easy and would require some training on my part. Recombinant DNA technology is easy to produce but not easy to extract. It is funny how easy a plastid can be spliced with DNA. In fact, high school students could do it. The extraction of useful product is the one I'm not sure on though. Just like beef and pork insulin were used for the treatment of patients for a long time but !!!!ed if I know the process. Anyway, economic concerns are the largest ones facing me personally. I can survive weather here with not much difficulty. Don't really see much in the way of nukes and the like. Collapse of the basic structure we currently have is my biggest concern and this will be most upset when the money goes by the wayside. Ahhh, I ramble and digress from the issue.

All you have to do is look back in history. All great empires rise and fall. It is just the way it works. I belive that the cause of the collapse will be the decline of the economy and the dollar becomes worthless. Thank you China for destroying our great country.

Dont forget that our economy is closely related to the global economy. If ours goes drastically south, so does everyone elses. China, Rusia, N. Korea, etc. may be our nemisis's but also have to be pragmatic. Their economys are chained to us and nobody wants to drop anchor. I think the biggest threat is terroristic attacks, specifically biological. Now that would shake our economy! But the ensuing build up for the certain war that will follow might stabilize the economy. I say we go kill these !!!!!!!s now anywhere we find them.

I believe that SHTF could happen because our society and government aren't omnipotent and can't prevent it, sometimes can't even stop themselves from causing it. I don't know when, but it's foolish to say it can't happen here. Could happen in my lifetime, have a feeling it will, but I don't really know.

I believe that we as a nation are closer than ever before, including since the Great Depression, to a total economic meltdown. The extreme danger in this is when it happened the last time in the 30's, it was brought on by wild stock speculation with margin buying, (basicly buying stock on credit with 5% down). Today most, not many but most people live the same way. Credit card spending in this nation is totally out of control, and has been for years with a great many people oweing well into 5 figures in credit card debt. Salt this over with extremely high mortgage payments, car payments on leases that when finished the owner is still the bank and not the person who took out the lease, and most middle aged people in this country are so in debt if they had to liquidate their assets and pay off their liabilities they would be standing naked in the street oweing money. People today have little to no net worth simply because as soon as they accumulate any wealth like equity in their home, they immediately borrow against it and buy some depreciating asset like a new car that will steadily drop in value until it's ultimately worth nothing. This last year the Wall Street Journal reported that for the first time since the Great Depression people have "saved" in the minus column. A negative 1 %. Which means they have spent more than they have earned. A business cannot run like this, how can a household? It can't for long. This can and will result in panic selling of over priced homes these people can no longer afford. It takes very little to trigger this, and once it happens there will be little real hard cash to stop it. The other thing is when this does in fact occur, it won't be like the 30's when people had respect for one another and helped each other out. There will be total anarchy because people today have little respect for anyone but themselves. We have become a totally "hooray for me and screw you", society. Guns and ammunition will be all but unavaliable, and priced to the moon. They will be priceless commodities because once you have a gun and ammo for it, you can get anything else you may need. No doubt we are looking at very ugly times ahead. It a matter of when, not if. Bill T.

History has proven that anything can happen. It`s also proven that it might not.

Skill, out weighs equipment. Which is to say that in my view, an ounce of survival skill would be worth 10 pounds of survival equipment.

It`s been said in this forum elsewhere, in the event of a catastrophy, get out of the city else you`ll surely die. This is sound advice, provided you have the skill to live in that environment.

I`m fortunate that due to a youth spent working out in the sticks I have a modicum of skills that would most likely serve me well.

Australian Aborigine`s wandered this great land for 1,000`s of years with what they carried in one hand. They lived, not just survived.

Be alert, not alarmed.

1 in 7 Americans carries 10 credit cards - MSN Money

This is on the MSN start page this morning. One of the MANY reasons we are going to have an economic meltdown. Bill T.

If those cards are not federaly insured, and I'm sure they're not, its the credit card companys that will take the hit they so deserve. I get 2 or 3 app's per day.
