Calvin, if all cops believed in the same oath you said like you do, then there would be no more bad cops. Unfortunately, like swearing on the Bible in court before one testifies, people have a tendancy to "say the words" just to get it over with.

If all gun owners believed that the 2nd Amendment makes all the others possible, there'd be no fighting to keep your guns. Running parallel with what you said, SKS, unfortunately gun owners let someone else fight for their right and do nothing. Sure, they talk the talk but will not walk the walk. It applies everywhere and to everyone. It's always a bad few who ruin it for the collective good. It's a "Do-as-I-say, not do-as-I-do" world for the most part.

I think it's the same with any part of the Constituiton/Bill of Rights. If you let them try to specifically define TOO much of any part, they will bury us by making regulations that counter, but not remove, what they are. I will feel very sorry for those officers that believe they are trapped by duty and not common sense when and if the day comes they will have to enforce those laws that are unconstitutional or against the Bill of Rights.

That isn't anything a few well placed rounds of 5.56 MM wouldn't fix. Bill T.

Saddly, about everything to do with this whole topic is politically motivated. Too many "Gray areas" now-a-days.

*EDIT*

Meaning the end result to the police officer.

Hope that helps you some, Rufus.
Also, please remember that I put my pants on the same way as you do. The only difference between you and I socially is that I became a police officer- nothing more. I do not go out of my way to make your life miserable. I just do the job I've sworn to do.
Am I for gun control? Not on your life. Will I go door-to-door to confiscate? I'll go door-to-door with a speech like, "Good afternoon, ma'am/sir. I'm a police officer sent here to let you know the government is wanting to confiscate your guns. Just thought you should know. Have a nice day". Am I doing my job? Yep. I'm there letting them know what's going on and since I physically didn't see any guns, they must not have them. Oh, well! I'll check the next house.
Bill, thanks for pointing out the many wonderful aspects of being a cop! You are right on the money!!
When the time comes, we'll see.

YOU won't 'cause you don't live here and let's face it- you aren't gonna trust any cop anyway. It's sad because cops can be your best allies in the right situations. Get to know some outside of the job and most of the time you won't know that they are a cop!
But, rest assured, my friend, that I would afford you every opportunity as a human being, not a subject, should this event ever happen and I come to your door, Ruf......
