Reading about survival in the early days of polar exploration when things went wrong I've noticed that it wasnt a case of how much wonderful equipment people had nearly as much as how much plain courage they had. To some extent too much supplies was a handicap, perhaps from over reliance on it rather than on total attention to the challenges they were facing. The fate of the Franklin expedition would be the best example of too much stuff and not enough thought.

It would be a good iddy if some of you members might add where you can buy some of the stuff we might need such as water purification tablets, dried foods, mre's and what knott.
Seems a very large quanity of water purifcation pills would be handy to share with kinfolks, friends and neighbors. As I read this a scanner would be very handy to...A.H

All my documents are scanned and in my GMAIL and USB key.
Water filtration tabs and straw
Pistol and carbine + 2 magazines for each
Biltong - about 1lbs - vacuum sealed with O2 absorbers
Vacuum sealed cornmeal with O2 absorbers 2lbs
Small Mess kit
Magnesium firestarter
Firstaid kit
Tarp and 50' paracord
Compass
Map
My trusty slingshot I made about 15 years ago....needs new rubber.

It doesn't get very cold here in GA, so I'm not too worried about clothing - I always have a jacket in the truck though - but that's not planned - just sloppy.

WallyMart has many items - Water Purification Tablets (both bottles, the purifier and the neutralizer to make it taste better), workable cheap rain ponchos (not the clear vinyl type, which IMO are too flimsy!), decent knives (both folding and fixed blade), the orange plastic match containers with a flint striker on the bottom, good Silva compasses, plastic tent stakes (I find the steel wire type in many tents useless in sandy soil!), good stainless steel mess kits (aluminum tends to corrode if not dried quickly!), lexan utensils, some very nice LED headlights and mini-lanterns (batteries last MUCH longer than regular bulbs!). Look in the bicycle section for some decent lexan water bottles. Sporting goods has a fair hydration pack - works well on my MC excursions. Holds some extra gear in addition to the 2 liter bladder.
My Wally's has packaged spare fibreglass poles for tents - generic and easily modified for different tents. I laid in several spares, as these rods break occasionally!
Other stuff I find in the Campmor catalog (google them for their online site and catalog). Lots of good gear in there! If you are 'bigger than the average bear' like me, you'll need to really search for bigger sleeping bags. No Wally's bags fit me . . .
Sportsman's Guide has some fairly decent camping gear too, that can find a place in your BOB/BOV. I just got their 2.5lb. Bivy Tent, and will field test it at the end of the month on a camping outing. Small enough for a good BOB!
