Going to try coyote hunting. Need something to get me thru the end of bow hunting and fishing. I here calling up coyotes can be very exciting! Going this weekend to buy a .223. Anyone have a suggestion on what type of scope to buy? Any tips on hunting coyotes will be appreciated. Thanks
See the other threads. I use a Nikon Buckmaster 6x18x40. Buy a yote hunting video or a book on the subject. Become educated before you go out or you'll educate the yote. They're very smart and unforgiving. make any mistakes and you wont see any. Good luck!

A nikon prostaff is about as low as I would go while hunting coyote, the shots can get out there. I did get a video with randy anderson in it the other day, and it had some good advice in it. You will learn as you go.
I use a 3-9x variable, and do just fine. In fact, it is a nikon prostaff. Longest shot I've made on a yote was 562 yards, measured with a range finder. I used a .300 Weatherby mag. Knocked the snot outta him. My primary gun is a Remington 700 VSF in .22-250. If it's windy out, I grab either a .30-06, .243, or .300 Weatherby. All shooting custom loads. I found out that calling in the evening is just as good as calling at night. Get a synthetic stocked gun, and make sure the barrel is matte black. The scope should be black also. WEAR LOADS OF CAMO. If you are really serious, ghillie suits work wonders on yotes. A good tactic is to shoot some rabbits, run a knife from their stomach to their throat, and put em beside your call. Keeps Old wily busy while you line him up. Another thing that is a must is a nice bipod. You'll be shooting at extreme distances, and bipods help wonders. PM me if you got any questions.
Battery powered decoys work wonders also. When they see that, they usually focus in on it and pay less attention to spotting trouble(you). Position it where the yote will get down wind of it without getting down wind of you.

Im with frozentorso, use a decoy. I think it makes a huge difference. If your going to be calling in low light situations a 50mm objective lens is nice but sometimes a pain because you have to use super high mounts. I have a simmons 4.5x 14x50mm with an adjustable objective that works great and wont kill your pocket book either. Its more than camo on coyotes too, you need to be really still they seem to be able to pick on movement almost uncannily. Thats why the decoy is a great help, good luck.
I put 50mm objectives on my deer or larger caliber rifles. You only need 10mm more height from a 40 to a 50.

Well, I made it out saturday, and did manage to call 3 in, none of which offerd a shot. I do have a good spot to go tomorrow, a farmer is having trouble. Hopefully some neighboring farmers will be willing to let me on, they usually are.
I was always looking for new spots and neighboring farmers with at least 1000 acres to hunt. Then I found a guy who lets me hunt his 40 sections(thats 40 square miles to those in Rhode Island) near Odessa. It would take weeks to hunt it all. And if I get tired of that, he has 50 more sections west of there. Its un-freakin-believable how many yotes and fox there are. Yahtzee!

On our second stand of the night(and only unproductive one) we set up and sat quietly in the back of my Avalanche for about 25 minutes listening to all the different packs and noting their positions. Must have been 5. Then when I started calling, I heard one yote barking about 300 yards down wind of us, no doubt warning the others off. It busted us before we even started. Its still cool to just sit and listen. When you get busted enough you start understanding their howl's.
