As many of us have speculated, during SHTF it is likely that there will be little or no power and the same goes for normal communcation routes, i.e. internet, landline phone, cellphone, etc.
But, for those that have battery powered CB (myself) or a generator for a HAM radio, I'm thinking we could establish a channel for G&G personnel to be able to contact and communicate with each other in times of emergency.
It doesn't even have to be a national emergency; say your city suffers a flood, tornado, hurricane or earthquake and you are plunged into SHTF situations for at least a few days if not weeks. It would be nice to hop on your radio and get ahold of someone you know from the boards to let us all know you're okay or if you need help. It would also let all those G&G members in an affected area band together as like-minded individuals for survival.
Now, in national situations, it would benefit us even more in such that we would be able to organize through a web of radio contacts.
I know this sounds kind of paranoid/silly, but I, for one, would like to be able to pick up my handheld CB after "The Big One" here in Seattle (they predict 8-10 on the Richter scale) and get ahold of at least one of you guys in the surrounding area to either coordinate rescue/survival efforts.
Honestly, as for channel selection, I don't know enough about either CB or HAM to know which is best for power/distance and which would be least likely to be being used by others.
CB is such a small reception distance (10-20 miles). I'm thinking sat phones might be best or a ham radio; neither of which I am in the position to purchase.

I am set up for Ham HF,VHF,UHF,GMRS, CB, and Shortwave, as well as Satellite repeaters, both base and Mobile. CB and 10 meter Ham bands wont be Hot for DX for a couple more years until the 11 year Cycle sunspots start again.I also have IRLP Node 3732 up and running VOIP, but it will not be reliable because of Internet failure during SHTF situations.
I am A General Class Ham Operator.

I have a handheld VHF radio, but I use it on my boat. Never thought about it during SHTF, just yell STOPPER over the radidio and let me know your 20 and I'll come a running with gun in hand and spare ammo!!! and maybe a beer or 12 too!

Wow, Moose. I guess living up there you have to be up on that. I 've got a GX134 version LF 220 volt, bi-frequency, polar modulated, aurora borealis tuned convection oscillator, but I cant find my manual. I'll use smoke signals.
