i don't think the reply is out of topic . infact it kinda teachs others what is really needed and tells them what they are in for whether it's an emp attack or a huricane or just a full blown power failure people can learn alot from reading post. getting back to the book and the emp i still am wondering why he is running the freezer ??? i would have ate all the stuff that can go bad first that way i wouldn't have to worry about useing up my gas to keep it cold the generator could be used for just pumping water and maybe just a few other things but what we do first is start cooking everything that can spoil then after that is gone you don't have to worry about it you can store up the can good and other stuff and they are lucky the store is giving them 50.00 a day in food if they would have been eating everything that can spoil and saving up on all the other stuff they got from the store i think they would be better off. i know for katrina the first night i had myself a huge shrimp boil .lol my freezer was full of seafood shrimp/fish/froglegs we ate all that first then we opened the door and let it defrost and cleaned it out . i found something good to pickup is them little denty morre beef stew in the can you don't need a pot just put the can right on the stove burner and a can will make a meal for one person potted meat and crackers are good too. another thing that alot of people over look is fire starting stuff they always buy them matchs and to me thats a big no!no! i say get a good zippo and a few packs of flint and a few bottles of fluid the flints can go into the back of the lighter and you won't have to worry about the rain wind or nuthin with a zippo but with matches think back to lighting a camp fire with a match how many of you light the match and it goes out before the fire starts you might go though 4 or five matchs before you get a little flame.another thing you might wanna get to keep on hand is a big bag of cotton balls they work great for fire starting you just put 4 or 5 drops of fluid on one stick it to the end of a stick and light it then shove it into the base of your kindling wod and it will burn for a good minute sometimes 2 depending on how much fluid you put on it. as for as moscito control you can do what i do in the woods i have a few of these stashed around the woods i tood a red shop towel and put it into a small mason jar then i filled it with that citranela oil and when me and the wife go walk we can stop at any location in the woods and i just go and uncover it from behind a tree take off the lid and fire it up they will last for a while and the one gallon jug is really cheap.why pay 3 bucks for a small candle that don't work when you can make your own that clears our a yard.lol oh well i'm ramblin on. let me go for nowif i'm talking to much just say hey shut the heck up man .lol

Keep reading, remember he's not a survivalist, just a regular guy. I think that's what the author is trying to convey.
I had to laugh when I read about the cotton balls and the rag with the citronella oil, I combine the two when ever we sit out side. I soak the cotton balls in the oil and then use them to lite the fire I also have several citronella torches around the backyard, including a small set that sit on the picnic table. We use the small ones when we eat outside rarely see a mosquito and I have a canal in the back of my house.
When buying food for an emergency I always tell people to buy foods they enjoy, why make a miserable situation worse by having to eat SPAM if you don't like it (I love SPAM). Remember the kids when buying supplies, they're going to be crabby and whining, have them make their own pizzas. Buy the pre-cooked pizza bread like Boboli have them smear the sauce and put the some cheese from the frig before it goes bad or use hard cheese that doesn't require refrigeration and then put it on the grill. Doesn't take long since everything is cooked just long enough to melt the cheese. The whole point is to try and make a bad situation better not just surviving it but coming out of it a better person.

Most canned goods, especially veggies, are good for ten years or more if kept fairly cool. Meat and tomato products may be more limited.

we dry the shrimp down here and they last a long time.i dried me a gallon jar a few years ago and i am finnaly getting to the bottom of it now. you can use them for cooking just like regular shrimp . but my question is how long can beef jerky last??

From what I've read it can last up to two years without refrigeration. I always eat any jerky I make well before any real time has gone by. Never tried drying shrimp, do you prep them in any way? Did have fish jerky once, I think that would be my last resort food source.

just boil the shrimp like your gonna eat them and put them out in the sun for a few days. after about day 3 you put on a pair of gloves and grab a hand full of shrimp and just kinda swoosh them around in your hands like your trying to keep your hands warm and all the peelings will flake off and your left with a dried peice of shrimp meat. we boil like 60 or 70 pounds at a time when we do it but you can do it with a little amount and put the shrimp in the oven and dry them that way too i do that too. i just put what ever i have left over after a boil and put it on a cookie sheet and set the oven on 275 or 300 and keep an eye on it . just keep movin them around and in about an hour or less you will have dried shrimp.

yea you gotta keep an eye on them the other day i boiled a sack of crawfish and i ate me a pan full of them and i covered up the pan full of potatoes and corn and sausage's well i come back outside and seen the cover on the ground and all the sausages were gone. my dog done ate them all. but atleast he left me the potatoes and the corn . although i had to chunk one peice of tator cause it had teeth marks on it but the rest was still good. he didn't get the crawfish i had them in a ice chest .

Every now and then I'll make a huge amount of seafood Paella, especially when the lobster and crab are in season and throw in about three pounds of shrimp and two pounds of scallops. Now that I know I can dry the shrimp I'll probably make twenty pounds at a time. Ever try drying lobster ,crab or scallops? Now you got me salivating, going to have to run down to the fish monger and get me some fixings. Looks like I'm making Paella tonight, Wife will be happy. |
