Since EMP will affect anything transisterized, I keep Old tube type radios around as well as Hardened (Shielded) Military receivers. If you have advance warning, you can build a cheap "Faraday Cage" out of an All Metal Garbage Can, by strapping the lid to the Body with flat braided Cable and then have it secured to an Earth Ground. Electronic stuff placed inside should withstand the pulse this way. As far as transportation, you better have an Old car or Truck with points ignition, or you will be peddling or walking !

That's another reason to buy (old) American.
I can find points and a condenser for my old '68 Ranchero anywhere, try that with your Accord or Camry.
I drive my 1991 Honda CRX for the 30+ MPG, but I've got my 1972 Mach 1 Mustang with 351C V8 for those "dire" situations. ;-) Now, admittedly, I replaced the points with electronic ignition, but one trip to Schuck's/Krager/Checker and a few minutes under the hood takes care of that .
Best get the parts NOW and put them in shielded storage - after the balloon goes up, they'll cost a fortune IF they still work.
Same with electronic ignition boxes, engine computers and alternators - store a spare now - you'll be driving after the event (as long as you have gas).
It also won't necessarily mean horse&buggy age forever - we can climb back up the technology ladder - the knowledge and raw materials will still be there!
There are theories out there that your vehicle could act like a faraday box if you grounded the metal portion to earth ground and the chasis would protect the computer parts that make it go vroom.
Remember you have to isolate whatever you put in the faraday box from the box itself, just keep the electronics away from the outside portion of the box and your stuff should make it through.
I have an old military medical box stuffed full of foam and keep my scanner and crank radio in there. Need to put the VHF radio in there too.

not that it has anything to do with an EMP pulse, but check out the novel "Dies the Fire" by SM Stirling. it shows a scenario when electricity stops working around the globe.
Horses would be worth their weight in gold.....if gold would cost anything then anyway.
We have several horse ranches near our house and I've made sure to become close friends with a few of them. The emp problem depends on how wide spread it is, is it local, state, national or worldwide? If it's worldwide then I better get a saddle fitted for my butt. We also have good mountain bikes and an old Honda Odyssey Dune-buggy.
Of course transportation is the least of our problems. Will the emp affect pacemakers, freighters, planes, locomotives and thousands of little things we take for granted? Food distribution will come to a halt, farmers use state of the art tractors, so no new crops, water plants unless shielded may not be able to pump. Most large cities will become flaming deathtraps, just look up and count how many planes are overhead, now picture them falling and bursting into flames.
A pilot could probably land a plane without electronics.
If the plane was of the fly by wire type, then the pilot would have more troubles.
Many small planes probably would run even if there was emp.
It would be like it is now..about a month out of the year here on the gulf coast during hurricane season.
no power, no a/c, no gas....cooking on a gas grill....

I believe EMP isn't nearly the bugaboo many think. Many electrical devices would still work. Simple generators can still be built to charge batteries and run motorised equipment. Old tube gear will likely survive, and can be used. Old diesel powered vehicles will still run. Generators could be made to replace fried alternators.
