I Looked at a m1 carbine that was marked by Inland with a serial numbe 718,xxx. I wanted to know if this could be an automatic gun. I have read that it was not until M2 did they make this fully automatic? Thanks Brian
If your receiver is marked M2 , then it was Mfg. as a selectfire Carbine. Later a lot of M1 carbines were converted with M2 parts including the slide, the sear, hammer, disconnector assembly, lever , and selector switch. The stock was changed to the Pot Belly style with a small cutout area for the selecter switch on the top left side next to the receiver inline with the front trigger group retainer pin.

A six digit Inland was originally manufactured as a semi-auto. M2s didn't start until up in the 6 million range. That is not to say that it couldn't have been converted later. Many were. However; if the marking on the receiver bridge says M1 and is not overstamped. Don't worry about it. Incidentally, some "M2" parts found their way into rebuilds. M2 trigger housings, sears and slides are commonly found on M1 rebuilds and were actually found on factory M1s in the higher serial number ranges. These do not constitute makeing the carbine an M2 according to the BATFE. M2 replacement stock were also used on M1s for rebuilding. If the gun doesn't have a selector switch on the left side of the front receiver ring, and/or the receiver ring isn't marked M2, I don't think you need to concern yourself about it being full auto/select fire.

If it is a Registered Machine gun, then it has to be handled by a Class 3 NFA dealer, with an application, fingerprints and 200.00 Tax stamp fee...Then about 3-6 months wait for approval to purchase...If it is semi-auto..Then it is like any other firearm, white form and background NICS check. If approved over the phone, you can take it home with you !

If its a M1 carbine its a semi auto, if its a M2 then its a automatic. Even if its Marked M2 but in the semi auto configuration the ATF still considers it a automatic
