What would be the pro's and con's of having a ak74,47 or an m16,m4 variant assault rifle in a shtf situation in terms of reliability, durability, cleaning, weight, accuracy? In one of these situations i would go for rugged durabilty, cleaning and reliablility, and after those three accuracy and weight.. what do you think my choice weapon should be? If I could get my hands on any of these weapons cost free, that is.
Presumably if you pick up a gun for free it comes with an ammo supply. If not, it isn't worth much, but is worth having I suppose in case you find ammo later.
For a gun to pick now you should pick something that you can become competent with and stock your own ammo and magazines for. With it you can get the guns and ammo used by your enemy.
So if 6.8 Rem SPC is the round you are most effective with, get it and stock it up. You won't find much laying on the battlefield. You can then always complement it with what's out there.
IF, apart from supply, you believe a certain rifle and round to be superior to the regular military ones, you should get it and stock up now while it's available. It won't be available if SHTF. The types of rifles everyone else will be carrying will be.
That being said, if you've already stocked up on your favorite, it's certainly a good idea to get standard things. There's a reason they're standard. But don't limit yourself to what you expect parts and supplies to be available for in the future. Whatever gun and ammo you pick up is likely to be all or nothing.

BRG3 good excellent read : I'm not changeing the subject but if a SHTF were to happen and we had to resort to useing firearms. Wouldn't it be a good idea to have a rifle for long range snipeing such as (example)a 300 Win. mag.
Personaly I wouldn't want to be in any close encounters yet the likely hood of a close encounters from protecting your stuff is very possible.
Wether we stay at our home's or some hide away, would'nt a long range rifle be a consideration on top of the AK,s and similar weapons under
ShTF or invasion circumstances.
I have to say, if those are your priorities, I'd go for an AK. If accuracy was at the top of your list, then I'd go for the AR. AR''s are very reliable - not at the same level as an AK, but close. Keep it clean and lubed and it will function.
The AK is built for a conscript....it will run through pretty much anything with minimal maintenance, but it will eventually fail as well.
Best compromise would be the Siaga .223 rifle with an adapter to use AR15 magazines. With conversion and all the gizmo's, it will still cost the same as another high quality AK - but you get to use 5.56 ammo.
If it were a SHTF situation, I'd always be with a good friend, and either have them or myself carry an AK-47. Who ever doesn't carry the AK would have a long range 30-06 or .308 (Probably 30-06 because I don't have much .308 ammo). That would cover our backs pretty well....
But as for 1 gun, I'd find a good place to stick it out with an AK.
I would prefer something along the lines of an ak, but shoots 5.56 rounds. Lighter easier to carry and recoil is less, but i also get the durability of an ak!

Sounds like you need the AK-74 or Saiga .223.

I'll take an ar just because I already have one.I don'have an ak but sks
which works just fine.Granted the ar not the m14 but it's still does an
adequate job.
I just got myself a Yugo M70 UF, this will be my primary rifle in most SHTF scenarios. I tend to prefer reliability over accuracy. As for the choose the weapon based on what ammo you'll find in the battlefield, to me it's a non issue. If you find ammo on the battlefield you'll find a weapon that goes with it. As others have stated, choose the weapon you feel most comfortable with and stock up on ammo for it. Most importantly is to practice as much as you can and become proficient with your chosen weapon.
For long range encounters I love my K31, scoped and zeroed at 200 yards, a 500-700 yard shot is well within it's capabilities. My eyes are to far gone to try it with iron sights. The ammo is a bit expensive but it's such a fun rifle to shoot.
