I hear ya. But what I was saying is we shouldn't go overboard buying stuff in a panic and that we should put our heads together to properly defeat stuff like this. I'm sorry if I wasn't clear.

I hear you, I wasn't trying to disagree with you, just to make a universal statement about what I believe we should all be doing.

Rep. McCarthy was on National Public Radio this morning and made a chilling statement..." Now that WE are in Control, we have a chance to pass more Gun Control laws"...
I thought that WE THE PEOPLE were in Control, and that she was just a representative of a part of New York Citizens...Kinda scary statement if you ask me.

It is not that hard for stupid people to be stupid. Much harder for them to listen to others and educate themselves. Much easier to give in to hysteria and listen to the nonsense the liberal media spews out.

Thanks, SR, I just used that on a reply to another board where I was using a bunch of patriot's quotes to counter this one: "Patriotism is the virtue of the vicious" --Oscar Wilde

You know what is going to happen when they start banning all these weapons right? People are going to start playing these sick games with explosives. A few household products mixed together can be very volotile. And, when put into a pipe or some other device with shards of metal, pellets, BB's, nails, etc...they can be more devastating than a bullet wound. Personally, I'd rather be shot in the face and die than have my legs or some other body part blown off and go through life with that struggle...or have shrapnel embed into my nervous system and cause issues the rest of my life.

Thumbs up

I don't think that bans are going to as easy to pass as they have been in the past.
Public sentiment is becomeing more progun and the Democrats know this, they were saying so yesterday on Fox News, the desire to disarm us is strong, but the desire to gain/maintain power is stronger.
The Republicans are more concerned with getting the money while the getting's good.

Unfortunately, you hit the nail on the head Ivan, no pun intended.

I'm a chemistry major attending the UW and have already finished my organic chemistry year. After taking those three quarters (second year of chemistry, General Chemistry is first year), you have enough knowledge to make nearly any explosive compound if you can find the structural chemical formula for it, which can be easily found on Wikipedia and other sites.

My group's end-of-the-year project was actually on household chemistry (beneficial uses, such as soap and making your own; hazards, such as mixing bleach and ammonia; and even explosive compounds). One of the sections of our board was "Explosive Aspirin"... yes, you read that right, you can take aspirin, do some organic chemistry techniques to it with easily purchased chemicals and end up with Trinitrophenol, which is very close in explosive power to Trinitrotoluene (TNT). *cough* I'm not saying it happened, but there's a chance that another member of my group actually did this and set-off some (about a marble-sized amount), creating a 6 foot crater. Like I said... all hypothetical. *cough* I'd call that pretty volitile.

I used to work for a company that built automated machinery, robots, pick & place machines, part assembly machines, etc...

We had this long-time relationship with companies who built the 3000-5000 psi air canisters used to deploy airbags in vehicles. Well, to activate the release of the gas in the canister, the equivalent of a bullet was shot into and penetrated through the cap of the canister which then released the gas.

The powder used to propel this gas is very explosive. Even 1 grain of this compound powder can blow 2 or 3 fingers off if it was to fire near your hand.

After a few trips to the library and some online searches, I found out this powder can be made with some household products, which does include, as you said, pure aspirin, a few heated liquids and some other powders. The commercial variation is a bit more refined but you can make it at home and come up with nearly something as volotile.

On another note, have you ever taken 15-20 4th of July sparklers, cut the bare wire end off of them all, then completely wrap them in duct tape and stuck one out the end, light it...? It will leave a 15-20 INCH deep x 18-24 INCH diameter hole in dry, packed earth/dirt.

Funny you should mention that... in my first quarter of General Chemistry, I did a report on the chemistry of Airbags. I'd be happy to send you the document file if you give me an email address to send it to (PM me, so that you don't get more spam). The chemical in most airbags is Sodium Azide, which is actually tough to make, usually, as Azides are kind of unstable, but not too bad. The problem is, if you get any acid on them, say battery acid, the stuff will decompose into a VERY unstable and potentially spontaneous-combustible product. E.g. Don't go leaving cars around with airbags in 'em, especially if it's known that there's a chance it may come in contact with acid.

As for the sparklers, I'd imagine that's just a bunch of basic gunpowder or smokeless powder that's bound up in some resin to the stick. By containing it in the duct tape, you're increasing the pressure build-up; just like setting off a rounds by fire usually won't get them going very fast, but if you put them in a contained area, like a barrel, they'll build pressure and go faster. Too much pressure and you have yourself a KB, ta-da!

Well I never had that much fun in Organic Chem.

This quote seems appropriate for this post. "Arms discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property... Horrid mischief would ensue were the law-abiding deprived of the use of them."
Thomas Paine

Also, Admiral Yamato of the Japanese Navy once said: "You cannot invade mainland United States. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass."
