If your local grocery store couldn't operate for whatever reason do you have alternative sources to acquire food? If you have a good grain mill and we all should, then you can go to your nearby feed store and purchase corn, oats, barley, flax seed, whole wheat, and even soy bean by the 50lb bag and several other grains depending on which animals they are geared to feed. You can even get powdered milk that's used for calves and colts, I've tasted it when I lived on the farm and it's not bad. This is just one example of an emergency food supply I'd like to hear some others.
Since Grocery stores only have a 3 day supply of food and will run out fast,so a feed store would be a great option until they run out as well...then what do you do? I buy books on wild plants and fungi that are edible so I can go out and forage for food if the need ever arises. We also keep seed banks so that a garden can be planted in spring/summer. I harvest berries and either can them, freeze them , or dehydrate them for future use. Mushrooms like Morels can be dehydrated and vacuum sealed . Food for survival can be found in most areas if you know what is edible...Meat and fish are not a problem up here but that too will depend on what SHTF scenario arises, such as radiation or Biological weapons killing off the fish and game populations or contaminating same...

Squirrels - enough here to give me many meals, unless the other neighbors pop them too. The cats are fewer, but have more meat. Songbirds can be good - fat robins are superb, but seasonal.
The local fishing lake is close enough to bicycle to.

Lots of alternatives . . .
Do you have to worry about mercury in your fish? I know we have that problem from all the chemicals that run into the water system from the farms. They've advised people not to eat the canal fish more than, I believe, twice a month. Don't know if you have large farms in your area were you'd have to worry about pesticide and fertilizer runoff.
Nope - this lake is in the National Forest, and is a great fishing area for Bream, Catfish and Bass.
After a nuke event, I'd have to be mighty careful though!

I'll tell you what this means, Norm, no size restrictions and screw the limit!!
they call it sportsmans paridise down here for the reason there is so much of game or fish that you really don't have to go to a store for food other than salt maybe a few things.
*Munch....Munch...* Mmmmmhhhmmmmm, good ham! ( By the way, that isnt ham, it is your next door neighbor's right arm after he tried to steal the last of your food stock and run away with your daughter----> )
Seeing as how I live a 5 minute bike-ride from the Puget Sound (which is connected to the Pacific Ocean), I can do as my late paternal grandmother did during the depression and survive off the sea. She lived off of oysters that were plentiful near where she lived and she never went hungry. I'm sure the lack of variety was a bit of a problem, but it's better than starvation.
I've got fishing pole and crabbing pot so I can survive juuuust fine.
As for contamination of wildlife, if they're that contaminated, it's likely that so am I, so I'd be screwed anyways.

Grasshoppers, termites and frogs - yup, ate them all before.
Take a bush and whack the grasshopper senseless. Takes a while, but if you are methodical and patient, you can get enough protien to live off.
Fishing in nearby lake and stream. Deer all over my area and squirrels galor - and let's not forget Possums - and last but not least I can always walk into the local DNR forest and take a deer if needed - if things get that bad, there probably is no more DNR to worry about.
Earthworms, cleaned. Lightly sauteed in a tangy sauce - not too bad. Pure protein. Once we get past our learned prejudices in food, the world is our supermarket!
Just pretend you're a tough Klingon warrior - kinda like their "Gahkk" dish.
I do love gator tail steaks. Problem I have is if I'm probably about 10 miles from the Everglades so if transportation is non existent I'd have a hard time getting there and back. You should see the size of the catfish in the swamp and plenty of froglegs. Some good squirrel dirty rice with deep fried rattle snake, oh man that's good. Yeah I might be Cuban but I'm still a Redneck.
