Pred, while I see your point, you need to remember, we are all formed into who we are starting at a very young age. Don't get me wrong, I'm NOT advocating more "big brother" intervention in our lives. The problem as I see it, is that the parents are turning over responsibility for their childrens' formulative years to the "gods of the magic box" who, for the most part, are idiots themselves. Be honest now, are you not terrified at the thought of a six year-old sitting in front of the t.v. watching Rosie O'Donnell spewing drivel? This is our future in far too many cases. If we don't start taking responsibility for our own children, we are doomed. The movie rating system was created to aid parents in choosing movies suitable for their children. That system is now a joke-we see "R" rated stuff on prime-time television and it is a sad fact of life that children emulate what they see if not taught otherwise. I don't agree with it, but this is an attempt to do what too many parents won't do-ie:actually do something beneficial by limiting kids' exposure to a damaging product. I would rather see parents punished for smoking with children in the car, but that's just me. I spent the first 8 yrs of my life going to the emergency room for breathing treatments every month or so when I'd have a bad asthma attack. When I turned 18 and moved away from home, my asthma magically disappeared. It took a few years to figure out that it was due to living in a smoke-filled house. Smoking killed both of my parents and sickened me for years so I really don't mind seeing efforts to stop it's spread. I think the claims that the tobacco co's "forced" someone to smoke are absurd but kids start every day.

Banning ANYTHING in order to please a select few or group is just exactly what Hitler, Stalin, Mouseytongue, Tito etc...did. Oh yeah, I almost forgot Madiline Murray O'hare and her following. If "they" keep banning stuff, to appease certain select people or groups, we're gonna' end up like the other subjects. We're already started off in that direction. JMHO

I agree with you JB. Before to long we may need a pocket book with what we can say, can't say do and not do.

i have actually been scolded by people in the grocery store, walmart, target, etc for being "mean" to my kids. my son, at about 2 was pulling crap off of the shelves and was told repeatedly to stop. in my way of parenting, they get told, they get a warning (ie, you do that one more time, you're getting _____ , a spanking, going to your room, time out, etc, depending on the crime), then they get the consequence. finally, he grabbed another thing, and i slapped his hand. I had a lady come over and rip me up one side and down the other because he was a baby and didn't know what he was doing...well, let me tell you, my kids are not dumb, sometimes i think they are already smarter than me. he completely knew what he was doing and he was pushing my buttons. another time, my daughter was doing what we call a rain dance in the middle of an aisle at the grocery store. i told her to stop or i was leaving her there. i said, you know how to behave and you're embarrassing me. she continued, so i started walking, she continued and didn't notice that i had left. i went just around the end of the aisle, where i could see her, but she couldn't see me. when she finally stopped and looked around and noticed me gone, she almost began to panic. i let her sweat it for a second, then i called her name. i had another mom let me have it then too. but you know what....my kids haven't repeated either of those behaviors since then...so maybe i am mean, but i have well behaved kids who obey...

I don't think my parents ever had to actually tell me or my brothers and sisters not to act up in a grocery store; it was simply understood we'd die if we tried it.

My parents weren't "mean," but they expected proper behavior inside the house and in public, and got it. A matter of simple self-defense on their part I suppose, seeing as how they had eight kids.

My Mom used my Dads 54 inch belt to persuade us to behave, she was very sucessful at useing it. lol. Sometimes we looked like zebras.
Today she'd be put under jail for that.
No offence please but the bible says break a reed and beat them with it, they want break ! Pertaining to misbehaven children.
That said I never had to punish my son when he was growing up, but now after he's gotten out of college and working his attitude needs adjusting and I'd like to take a boat paddle to his behind. A.H

You think that's something. You should see the movie "This Film Not Yet Rated".
The film maker did a documentry on the MPAA and how they rate the films they view. It was pretty interesting. But the best part is at the last, when he submits his film to the MPAA for a rateing. To no ones suprise it recived an NC-17.
But I caution not to let children see it. It contains clips from various movies with strong sexual content.

I find the logic escapes me on this one. smoking is bad, yes. but, up the rating for a scene in which someone is smoking?

PG at highest if they were to go mandatory on the movie ratings for smoking.

Ironic that they talk about a mandatory R rating for any smoking while sneaking sex in increased levels into the lower ratings.

PG-13 movies seem to have plenty of sexual depictions short of full nudity, or even some nudity in less than xetremely erotic contexts.

As far as influences on kids, I figure it's easier to quit smoking than to erase a sexual mistake.

If they don't start smoking, they can have a longer, healthier sex life...

I noticed something tonight while watching Dodgeball. Over the weekend FX had "The Girl Next Door" on TV, and showed the guys butt as he ran down the street naked. I don't mean a second of it, I mean a good 5-10 seconds of it. Tonight on Dodgeball, they edited out a part were a guy says "Remember to take care of your balls", or something like that, but leave in every time someone says god #$%^....... The point is, it gives you a hint of what the powers that be have in store.
