Steel wool and a 9 volt battery... which you could've found out here: http://www.gunandgame.com/forums/sur...al-gear-3.html, but you just asked the question again there instead of reading the thread and finding the answers from a bunch of us to that question already.

There are many innovative ways to start fire, but the best fire helper I found are pine-knots.My Father would have us kids chop them out of the pine slash,"leftover wood from logs going to mill",and take them home, for fire starters with the woodstove.
does any one know any thing about the steel wool and a batterie does it work good
Okay, that's it...
*beats blaze970 over the head repeatedly with a large piece of wood until it snaps*
Now that you've been beaten with the CLUE-by-Four, maybe you'll listen and read...
The link I posted for you above which I'll post again: http://www.gunandgame.com/forums/sur...ival-gear.html has not only explanation from me about it, but an account of a gent *cough-AH-cough* on here that decided to use a large amount and a car battery... I wonder if his eyebrows and mustache have grown back in?
The great part about steel wool and batteries is that they can be soaking wet and will still work.
Please take the time to read threads that people link to if they take the time to respond to your question. It's rather frustrating when you ask a question that you know is answered in the link you posted for the person.

Best way I've found to start a fire is to call my Wife fat.
i just try not to call my wife period . lol. any peace i get is well respected and i ain't gonna ruin it by placing a phone call to the devil's helper.
sure why not that bundle of steel wool kinda reminds me of somethin but heck i ain't gonna say that in here . like building up alot of heat with the friction on one of them european wemons and them peubs goin up in flames from the heat build up oh man i shoulda not posted that but heck it was funny.hey maybe thats where they figured it out of how to start a fire that way.
When I was in the Navy, we would take a single strand of very coarse steel wool and stretch it across the 9V terminals (this battery is the lantern size) and the steel wool would turn red hot. Use to light our cigs that way!!
You can also light fine steel wool with one of those boy scout sparkers, or flint and steel, But be careful, once you get a whole roll going it wont stop!
