Hey guys, what's up! I gotta question... I've got a few guns and they all have there purposes. My dad doesn't feel comfortable with my SKS as a "Survival" rifle. He doesn't think that an SKS with 10 rds into it is enough for him to put away something like The "Lower 48" Bear or Mtn. Lion if they jumped him. I didn't really argue with him based on facts. I feel comfortable with it but is he right? Is that 7.62 really not enough to stop "charging" bears or mtn. lion? I mean CHARGING! Any insight?
With about the same power as a 30-30 ,the 7.62X39 should be able to handle killing smaller bears and mt. lions with well placed shots, the advantage being having the ability to rapid fire multiple shots with the SKS and having 10 rnds in the magazine, vs.a bolt action or lever action rifle. Most autoloading hunting rifles only carry 4 rounds in the magazine...

The SKS is one of my favorite rifles to shoot with and I've taken it hunting on several occasions. I hunt Wild Boar, over 300 pounds is not rare and I feel very comfortable bringing it down with the SKS. Honestly if a giant grizzly charges me the smell emanating from my pants will likely scare him away.
Always Run UPHILL if a big Grizz is chasing you...So he can slip in your Poop as he comes after you....Carry a .44 Magnum as backup, shoot 5 rounds only, saving the last one for yourself if you miss...
Alaskan advice...

Actually, the big bears go up hill like freight train. Because their front legs are short, they tend to fall and roll into a ball going down hill, so run down and across the hill, so that the bear doesn’t roll down the following you.
actually if yer worried about BIG griz I'd suggest getting one of the new Bear Pepper spray/mace canisters. They disperse the spray very effectively out to about 20+/- feet and with the griz having one of the more sensitive olefatory nerves in nature from the video I've seen it brings em to an abrupt halt.

Yeah Right...The Bear will Have Cajun Human for supper. Alaska Bears roll around in the pepper spray and seem to enjoy the Flavor of Hot Pepper as was videoed in a test by Park Service...They went back to Shotguns !

LOL Rich , no to be honest I don't know who makes this here stuff , but they had it highlighted in a show on the outdoor channel not long ago. The big griz was rushing two fishermen and the ol boy pulls this can about as big as a can of wasp or hornet spray and when they cut loose with that spray it come out in a thick enormous cloud. That bear sat hisself down started sneezing and hacking and went off in the other direction as soon as he could see....

hehehe yeah, you can spot grizz poop....it has little bells in it and smells like pepper!
Honestly, if poachers can take down elephant with an AK47 and 2 shots, your SKS will take down a Grizz in less than 10 rounds...if not, you are done anyways.
Thanks guys. Whenever I go camping or hiking out in the woods I bring the SKS. Just to mess around and for self-defense. I live in AZ so no worries bout Grizzlies, but there are black bears and mtn. lions around here. I like the SKS cause it's durable, reliable, semi-auto, and my Chinese Paratrooper version is short and light so it's pretty quick to get it aimed and fire. Not to accurate, but good enough within 100 yards. I didn't get it to hunt, it's a "just in case" ya know. I couldn't imagine a real life scenario and if I'd react correctly and I wouldn't care if I mangled the animal with poor shots at that point. Just don't want it to eat me. The SKS would work for that I'm thinking! No?
