I believe a handgun is important in the field due to self-defense from 2-legged problems----not 4 legged problems. More people are probably attacked in the field from other people instead of animals. The #1 predator of man is-----man.

That is strictly a guess, but the news headlines seem to catch my attention.

As far as animals, I'd say go with your concerns for your area. We ain't got no bears. But rabid bobcats and coyotes are a concern. What works for me will not necessairly work for you.

I had a P89 and traded it away. I knew I wanted to get another 9mm handgun the P89 was a good gun. I went to my local gun store and found a used unfired glock m17 for 500 bucks. The P89 is going to have to wait for now.

My P89 9mm is my favorite semi. It feels great in my hand and I can't miss with it.I've had it for about 15yrs. Shot thousands and thousands of rounds thru it. Never ever had a problem with it. I would highly recommend anyone buying one if their hands are large enough. Not a small semi to hold.

Make sure you check with your state game and fish department about what calibers are acceptable to hunt with.

In Wyoming there are very specific qualifications a caliber of weapon has to achieve to be considered "acceptable hunting caliber". The .357 mag doesn't meet this criteria in Wyoming although it is a capable weapon for deer in most states.

As far as the 9mm luger goes, I wouldn't use it on anything more than badgers and coyotes personally. I want my quarry to fall dead when hit with the proper projectile. I generally don't have time to track an animal over thousands of acres because I wounded it with an inadequate weapon.

Of course, kill shots are all about shot placement. But even in the perfect conditions, things can go awry and that's where the larger calibers take up the slack.

Enjoy your P89. I love mine to death. I accidently dropped it off a 50' cliff once. I took it to my gunsmith promptly to get checked out. He handed it back to me within a few minutes and said it was unharmed. The pistol has never given me a moments aggravation in the 10 years I've owned it.

I have one and its great. I have shot 1000's of rounds through and no problems. Finding ammo is a problem now.
As for a main hunting gun. check your local regs. Here you have to have a 6" barrel at least.
9mm would not be my first choice for a hunting round for deer size game, but would be okay for coyote ans such. Just short range.
I would opt for 357 or larger for deer size and to be able to reach out to 50 to 75 yds.
