I believe a handgun is important in the field due to self-defense from 2-legged problems----not 4 legged problems. More people are probably attacked in the field from other people instead of animals. The #1 predator of man is-----man.
That is strictly a guess, but the news headlines seem to catch my attention.
As far as animals, I'd say go with your concerns for your area. We ain't got no bears. But rabid bobcats and coyotes are a concern. What works for me will not necessairly work for you.
