These are the 'burbs. There is no way that everyone with hunting guns can live off the varmits. There aren't enough of them. The plan during a pandemic, power failure, fuel shortage or uber-tornado is to stay put living off preserved food and water or filtered stream water. The camp stove can cook it with stock-piled gas. In the event of a concerted effort by a group of well-armed men, the plan would be to escape with as much rations and 0.357 ammunition as the Honda Civic hybrid (long-range, reliable) can carry. There is no way I can fight off a team effort without being killed myself even if I had a full-auto M14.

Well, I have 12 arrows equipped with 100gr target tips for my PSE Impala.
Also, last weekend I spurged and bought 1oo pellets for my two pellet rifles.
I know, how am I going to haul all that around? But with my killer pack monkey!!!

I currently only have .22's. I keep a few hundred rounds of good CCI as emergency ammo, and I usually have a few bricks of cheap stuff around for inexpensive target/plinking. I keep a box of 100 CCI's in the auto at all times. I can't envision a situation where I'd have to bail out of the auto and run with a gun and 100 rounds of ammo, but I'm covered there anyhow.

I also can't envision a situation where I'd suffer siege and attack where I live in New Hampshire. I'm not in New Orleans or L.A. My biggest problem is when the electricity goes out in the winter.

There are two opposing factors at work here. If you stay put, in a time of great social strife and conflict, there is no way one guy can defend against the world. Most likely, whoever kills you will worry about what ever ammo supply you have left.
If you bug out, there is no way you can carry your thousands and thousands of rounds of whatever.

An interesting point. Used to be, and still is to some people, a practice to have a carbine/handgun combo that takes the same ammo. That way you're covered whether you run or fort up.

I only have .22's right now, as I just started shooting again, and am in a bit of a financial difficulty as far as luxury purchases. So I have a .22 combo. Same ammo. Those Cowboy Action Shooters do this with their guns.

If I were a shooter with many different guns I would make a decision as to what my SHTF guns are, and have extra ammo for them set aside. My house is not bullet proof, so I would lose any siege and attack eventually. How much ammo can I carry? As Mannlicher says, it gets complicated.

I want to keep light and fast.

I've got a 24" barreled Bushmaster with a big scope and a bipod. I suppose if I wanted to make my way slowly and covertly, I could. But, it's weight is not really conducive to rapid movement on foot.

I'm building an M4 Bushy. I would prefer this weapon to carry with me in case of SHTF.

I also have a little .380 Auto (Walther PPK look-a-like). It is very easily cleaned and used. It's ammo is lightweight and effective. The gun itself is fairly lightweight as well.

I also just bought a 1911 variant gun, officer's model, so it is a bit smaller. .45 ACP ammo is not real cheap, but not too expensive. It is pretty heavy though, compared to the .223 and the .380A. So, though I would like to take this gun with me, I think it would be left behind were I to take myself by foot away from the shtf area.

Right now, I have about the following:

.223 - 1,000
.380A - 750
.45A - 400

If shtf to the point I would need to evacuate, I would take all my ammo, weapons' supplies, and weapons....as well as my SHTF crate I put together. I would also stop at the gun shop about 2 blocks from my house and take whatever I could get my hands on considering the fact that the folks there wouldn't shoot me on sight...

But, if I were to leave my vehicle on foot, or leave my home on foot, I would take the M4 and the .380 with about 500 rounds each along with my SHTF backpack from my SHTF crate with the super-essentials...Looks like a military ruck-sack with supplies in it. This would last me long enough to make it to wilderness where I could revert to living off of the land.

I would suggest sticking to ammo that is commonplace. .22lr, .223, 9mm, .40S&W (maybe), and 45 Auto. 12 ga. shotgun is very common too. Heck, most places that sell ammo, put this out on the shelf, not even locked up...lol. Basically, ammo that you can find at a Wal Mart or gun shop or something on your way out of town...(I've even seen 12ga. ammo sitting freely on the shelf at wal mart)

I'm seeing a lot of ammo listed by some people here and I have a question for some of the big stockpilers:
If you need to use 50,000 rounds of ammo how long do you think you're going to last, unless you have say 100 buddies backing you up?

You'd be better off picking something that you can 'scrounge from the land', keeping a moderate stockpile of that ammo. Unless you live in a place with a heckuva good well for water, and plentiful game and farmland you're going to have to move around at some point.
9mm, .22 LR, 12 Gau, and of course .223 seem the most obvious choices.

Unless you have enough people to cover all 4 corners of your house I suggest as much as you can carry. Now if your making a stand understand the fact you can only shoot one gun at a time I suggest at least 500 to 1000 rounds for each gun you own minimum. Since I have great neighbors, I have enough for them to help in defending our neighborhood. Remember strength in numbers.

100rnds for my .12 GA.
60rnds for .303 british
500rnds for .22
but hey im only 15 my dads got the rest! lol
oh yeah and 150rnds for .270

It's kind of like that around here. Every few years we get a bad ice storm with people having no power for a week or two, stores mobbed, people stealing neighbors generators. I can imagine if we get a really bad one, people might resort to breaking into houses for food and general looting. I figure even one box of target loads and my over under would be good enough to scare those types away.

I currently have a single 50cal can for reserve ammo. It'll hold a couple bricks of 22, about 100 shotshells, and 200 large rifle rounds.

I don't! That's why I keep a few guns at a buddys house. If you spread them out there will be a gun somewhere you can get your hands on.

This may not work for people who have a different gun and caliber for every day of the week. Those who carry a handgun can leave a box of ammo in the car. I have a box of .25 auto and a box of .22 LR. Whichever gun I carry with me, I have a box of ammo for it. 50 rounds plus two magazines is a lot better than just two magazines. If you need to bail out of your car, you can grab the box and run. This can be good if you travel back roads at night, where there is no safe lighted area to go to or help to flag down.

I don't have a diffrent caliber for everyday of the week but I do have a lot of .45 caliber weapons, revolvers, rifles, pistols some take longer cartridges than others but the preponderance of the weapons take the .45 caliber LC.
Thanks for the tip, I usually carry at least 100 rounds per weapon when going to the range.
