The French historically never managed to project sea power around the world as well as the British, mostly because their main focus was on land forces instead. After all, they weren't an island nation. But they were good seamen, and excellent gunners. They were a formidable force until the French Revolution wiped out the officers of noble lineage, which included most of the good ones.

And never forget that it was the the very impressive French victory over a British fleet, at the Battle of the Chesapeake in 1781, that prevented the British from being supplied, reinforced or evacuated at the Siege of Yorktown (where people also conveniently forget the French Army that fought side-by-side with the Colonials). The victory over Cornwallis at Yorktown convinced Britain to negotiate an end to the American Revolution.
